Warships from throughout Europe and the rest of the World gather in Portsmouth Naval Base, UK to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, and the death of Lord Nelson, 2005. Ships at the event ranged from Turkey to The Netherlands, and Russia to France: a rare sight.

  1. Any help identifying some of the ships would be much appreciated! Ships I can identify: F89 Aradu (Nigeria), F222 Regina Maria (Romania), F83 St Albans (Uk), L800 Rotterdam (Netherlands), A387 Fort Victoria (Uk), F31 Descubrieta (Spain).

I can not identify which carrier it’s at the back, (Ark Royal??) or the larger frigates at the front (Turkish, Pakistani, or Indian??)

  2. I did not realize that this was international at first, and thought that the RN looks *really* good in this photo.

I know there are legitimate reasons why the RN isn’t as large as in its heyday, but still…it just feels *right* to be intimidated by the RN.

  3. I’ve always found quite bizarre how Britain has this fetish about war and battles. In Spain these kind of ceremonies and celebrations would be deemed fascist and jingoistic.

  4. They’ve grouped themselves into breeding pairs. Soon, we’ll witness the new generation of battleships stumbling around in the seas, attempting to stay afloat.

  5. Why would the world celebrate a 200 year old British navy victory?
edit: I see the downvotes but no answers. Cowards.

  6. Man, the Battle of Trafalgar is just one of these hinge points where I can’t stop obsessing about what could have been. The War of the Third Coalition was a spectacular success overall but a decisive victory over the British might have fundamentally altered the Continental System and prevented the invasion of Russia.

History how it actually happened just sucked so bad…

  7. Jesus… Trafalgar, or shooting at docked, unmanned ships, loosing a ~~pirate~~ admiral, and call it a victory.

  8. Now feel free to correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think lord Nelson made it to 2005
