  1. Now let’s force Russia into a new wave of democracy that puts Putin and soviet revanchism out of existence!

  2. Lets hope chines ccp will fall sone.Imagine how much safer the world would be if all countries were democracies. We could use some of the huge military spendings to actualy solve ouer problems.

  3. while a lot of regular people suffered because of collapse and economic chaos, it was good thing in the end. every nation and people should be free to decide their own future.

  4. Fun choice of newspaper for it. The Tankies at the Morning Star were about the only people sad to see the back of it.

  5. I remember feeling true happiness, believing that our misery would end. It was a singularly wonderful feeling and I wish I could be that innocent again.

Edit: to be clear I wasn’t born in Sweden.

  6. As a Russian born in the 90s, I’m so glad it happened. No doubt it was a hard time for a country, a transformation wasn’t smooth, I and my neighbors were extremely poor, I even remember humanitarian aid from Germany (thx guys, the chocolate was really tasty!).
Although we didn’t have much, we had a feeling of freedom back then. I grew up listening, watching, and reading what I liked and not some crazy communist leader.
Unfortunately, I no longer live in Russia, for obvious reasons, but I hope that changes are near. Many Russians would like to return. It’s such a shame that we wasted so much time and opportunities. I can only imagine what Russia could be…

  7. Judging by how many people(not only old, but even middle-aged) feel nostalgic about USSR in post-soviet countries, i am surprised there was no young charismatic popular leaders in 1991 supporting preservation of SU, only some old farts that tried to make a coup and failed miserably. I mean, any ideology has its believers, and leftist ideas are very popular even today, but then and there, its seems like everyone were ok with country breaking apart. Only in 1993 pro-communist part of population tried to rebel, but was supressed with force.

  8. The demise of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.

  9. People voted to preserve a union in reformed form, then the August Coup happened, and the USSR unnecessarily collapsed. And then neoliberal economic policies collapsed the economy and lots of people suffered for no reason.

But sure. Go ahead and cheer that, r/europe.
