Putin wants a reliable client state as a buffer. He’s threatened by Ukraine’s choice to make closer ties to the West. That’s not NATO expansion, that’s self-determination for Ukraine.

So he seeks to have complete control over Ukraine, and treat it like his property. The author wrote this long article just to portray a de facto occupation, depriving Ukraine of its sovereignty, and somehow make it an appealing option by not directly calling it a Russian occupation.
Yeah, we don’t get it already, it would be great to have a sticked counter of article about how Russia seeks to stop nato expansion since the crisis.
Theories don’t matter, what matter is what they do, and for the moment they still have a major build up at the border.
