‘I often go out in Dublin city with no garda protection,’ says Justice Minister Helen McEntee as she defends photo op

  1. Just stop talking. You’re digging a bigger hole.

  2. ‘It’s only when I go to Talbot Street that I bring them with me.’

  3. Every Minister has round the clock Garda protection. That is what the Garda driver is, they’re all from the Special Detective Unit and act as close protection for the Ministers. That’s why it was security concerns that got them reassigned to all Ministries.

At the same time you will see TDs and Ministers out and about in the city on their own relatively frequently. I work part time while in college on Baggot st and you’d frequently see TDs and Ministers in a shop on their own, in a pub with friends, or just walking around.

The photo op was ill-advised, but equally it would have been weird to just have photos of her walking around on her own – as though being on Talbot st was like being in Mariupol.

  4. Who advised her this was a good idea. What was the point? To show a tourist that they were unlucky and Dublin is actually safe, tough luck? That she was going down to sort out the street herself?

The mind boggles how government media advisors get and keep jobs.

  5. Sounds like she is enticing an attack on herself.

  6. Last four times I’ve been in Dublin I’ve only seen about 10 Gardaí, and four of those sightings were the same blonde woman that stands guard outside the fencing of the Department of the Taoiseach building

What’s stranger is that there’s no Gardaí at all around Connolly, Dublin is the only large European city I’ve ever been to where its primary public transport hub doesn’t have any kind of dedicated police presence which is absolutely insane, even Victoria Street is covered by routine PSNI patrols so there’s always a car or jeep or beat around for an immediate response if something happens

  7. If only somebody could’ve warned us that she would be so inept, useless, out of her depth.
Leo handing her a little project to do between pregnancies has been rumbled. Now she has some actual real work and questions that need to be answered she is showing the world what a stuttering mess she is.
She’s appearing on news stations in the U.S. under stories where they are warning people about the violent dangers of visiting Ireland.

  8. Such a dumb decision. What was the point in going for a walk with Guards? there’s hardly going to be trouble if they are there. One of the most boggling stunts from this government,

  9. Irish people deserve all the pain and suffering they are enduring. Until you all wake up out of your comas and start voting correctly and becoming politically active in your local community the situation will only get worse.

  10. Props to Wild Billy The Kid O’Dea for highlighting our country’s issue with violence.
