Great to see the tributes pouring in lately but let’s not forget how the media ripped her apart throughout her life.
I remember one journalist in the Irish Independent when she got married to a drug councillor ringing up his employer to check if they were aware of her history of using drugs, I’m pretty sure all they got for the article was a no comment. Felt the need to put the fact that they reached out in the article. Can’t remember the journalists name but she was a young female journalist at the time.
Then there is the Gay Byrne of it all… I remember being young when she was on the Late Late and used to think he was a cool grandad type of character. Watching the documentary, he was so condescending and patronising. Seemed like he used to get her on for some tut-tutting and a hug.
Obviously she was widely condemned throughout her career particularly after the pope picture on SNL but we can’t forget how the Irish media in particular treated her like a pariah.
*Edit
Found the article, by Niamh Horan, what a cunt.

They ripped her apart to sell stories. Now have her face on their papers saying ‘tragedy’ or ‘RIP’ to sell more stories. The MSM are shameful bastards.
I guessed Niamh Horan before I read your edit.
And now the Indo is wall to wall tributes.
We didn’t deserve Sinéad and ultimately failed her. Her courage changed Ireland for the better.
Take a break for a day OP.
That’s what the media does…
“The media”. Huge chunks of the country ridiculed her endlessly during her peak years. Probably including me at times. A lot of revisionism going on here.
Someone needs to write an article exposing this stuff and it’s hypocrisy
That’s the pits. That Horan wan is some ruthless manipulative scummer. Fake fuckin head on her
The Late Late thing really bugs me, I saw somebody claim her Late Late appearances were evidence that the media here was supportive of her, and that’s really not the case. She was brought on as a reliable source of controversy, not as their beloved darling or anything
Interesting you mention Gay Byrne – seemed to me a horrible man, condescending and patronising to everyone but I thought that his relationship with Sinead O’Connor was his one redeeming feature. I’ve never seen the interviews. I’ll have to watch some of those interviews now to see if he was as bad with her as everyone else.
Have you ever seen the video of Gay Byrne interviewing Tom Waits? It’s on Youtube, you won’t believe it.
Brings me back to when Princess Diana died and all the (previously hyper-critical) media fawning over her.
Private Eye followed up with a historic edition detailing – with direct quotes – what columnists wrote about her pre/post death.
Sometimes with only days in-between.
Superb piece of journalism that exposed the rank hypocrisy of the media, which (of course), they were roundly pilloried for.
Niamh Horan is the same “journalist” who said that men cheat because they want to, women cheat because there’s issues in the relationship.
She’s a Grade A clown.
