Just while Sinead has us talking about exposing child abuse, I thought it could be good to speak about what’s going on in our country today.

[Tusla lose roughly 300 kids a year, every year.](https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-40961597.html) many of these are are a short duration of time, and they return, but Mary Canning of UCD has found this is no guarantee of them not being abused (third link, below).

This year, after many years of losing our most vulnerable for various lengths of time, they [still don’t know how to protect them from abuse and trafficking.](https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-41167573.html)

Dr. Mary Canning of UCD has found that the children are being groomed, lured and raped before being dropped back. [She’s calling for an investigation into Tusla.](https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/more-resources-needed-to-tackle-gangs-grooming-girls-in-state-care-researcher-says-1505272.html)

*edit* to say the reaction to this is WILD. I’ve no time for people willing to downplay legitimate concerns for child abuse but it seems it’s become a partisan political issue.

I’ve also added some further context to the links above.

If caring about this stuff makes me alt-right, I’ll take it all day. Downvote away, Joe Pesci.

  1. “the figures refer to incidents where a child is missing for a period of 20 minutes or longer. Generally, most of the incidents/reports are for children missing for less than 24 hours.”

Like without trying to negate the problems within the system, it’s residential care not a prison and there’ll always be kids who decide to go off and do their own thing for a few hours without permission.

Myself and my siblings all did it in our teens, but we weren’t in care so it isn’t a reportable incident.

  3. As someone who worked in the system, most of the kids are back in a matter of hours.

  4. Political football, everyone knows Tusla isn’t fit for purpose but the government turn a blind eye.

I think your figures may be overstated though – but undoubtedly there is an issue.

  5. Yeah I can tell you Tulsa really isn’t as dramatic as certain segments like to make it out to be lol
