To halt the spread of the virus, we have put restrictions on the social life.
Vacinated people don’t spread the virus nearly as much. So limiting their social life is not as useful.

I am pro-vaccine and getting a booster shot in about 1 week.
* However there a few points:
1. Omicron does not care about vaccines and booster shot, it escapes the majority of them, and people are still infectious (50-70%) so they can spread the disease.
It does improve the outcomes in the hospital and for the society as a whole.
* 2. Segregation of any kind leads to “apartheid like” society or to softer variants thereof. Next we will not be allowed into towns unless we drive electric?? What’s next?
* 3. Instead of having the balls and to suffer the political fallout to choose one of the options:
a) invoke the vaccine mandate as we have already in place for polio vaccine in children
b) let everybody live their lives! **because see point 1**, we are going to get omicron anyway

to wait it out and not take too many decision (belgian style) without looking at the reality in face and being hypocrites in the process. And **impose a mandate that is not a mandate while establishing a precedent.**

Do you think the pandemic and infections will magically disappear if you mandate the vaccine or introduce the 1g policy? The vaccines already do not deliver the effect that was promised in the beginning and effectiveness seems to drop over time. At this rate it seems you should get multiple booster per year, and I know a lot of people personal that are double vaccinated but would not take a booster.

How are you going to exclude the OG’s of antibodies the people that actually had the infection and now have the antibodies.
If a vaccination tries to achieve the same synthetically, the people that actually got the infection are just as good. This is just bullying people for not taking the vaccine.

This is exactly what not to do. The current vaccines do a bad job against omicron. Just to contextualize: I am a molecular biologist, I worked in a virology lab in the past, I just got my booster last week, I’d vaccinate my kids if they were old enough, I have supported vaccine mandates since the vaccines were approved. If we are in the current situation and not in a complete lockdown with curfews and hospitals overflowing, it is thanks to the efficacy of the covid vaccines and that so many people vaccinated, voluntarily or just to go to the restaurant.
But everything changed a month ago. The mutation pattern looked scary and the fears were confirmed. Antibody neutralization drops 22-fold, transmissibility is very high. Combined with the fact that immunity declines faster than expected, this is quite bad. Covid-19 is over, welcome to Covid-21. The good news is it appears to be milder, so we are back to square one with a smaller problem, but we are exhausted… We need a new vaccine, and clinical trials are already ongoing for polyvalent ones (delta+omicron). It will take a few more months, and if the results are good I will fully support vaccine mandates again.
If the current BNT162b2 and ChAdOx1 (not seen a lot on Moderna) vaccines would come out only now and these were the results of a clinical trial, they would surely not be approved by the FDA or EMA. Three shots over 6 months and after 10 weeks you are back to 35% efficacy? I think when and where omicron becomes dominant it will not make sense anymore to push for these vaccines.
That is, if you want people to trust that policies are reasonably based on science. If they burn all our cards on an argument that cannot be won, if they spend all their political energy on mandating pharmaceutical products that obviously do not work as they should, then next time nobody will listen and a vaccine mandate will not be possible mid-year because we will all remember how full of shit they are and how their policies are not based on scientific results. And maybe I will not get another booster then either.
