  1. “Dublin is a great city to live in, work in and visit and I am committed to increasing the number of Gardaí on our streets to ensure people feel safe, and to build stronger, safer communities”

Dublin is so safe that we need to increase Garda numbers…

  2. Ah yeah, let’s just overwork our current gardai some more.

That’ll definitely sort out the understaffing issue.

  3. It’s getting ridiculous. She needs to go, someone with actual experience and expertise in this area needs to step in. She hasn’t got a clue and is just reacting to blowback. We need an actual long term plan to address this.

  4. Hold on…where is this tax surplus of billions that everyone is talking about ? Just use that. Build some houses too while you’re at it.

  5. It’s absolutely fucking ridiculous that it took an American to lose an eye for this extra funding.

Truth of the matter is that justice minister and her ilk were perfectly happy to let our own get intimidated, robbed and assaulted without any care in the world.

As usual only when they suddenly look bad on the international stage do they react.

We deserve a better class of politicians

  6. Now go get Martin Nolan removed and I might be impressed. If you can’t fix the courts, don’t bother addressing the cops.

  7. Overworking our already limited, and falling, numbers of Gardaí isn’t the solution to Fine Gael’s (and our) problem.

Getting rid of that nepo baby McEntee and that ineffectual piece of shit Drew Harris would be a good start.

  8. Helen is unqualified for the job , she needs to go. It does not matter if the guards arrest em, the courts will have em back out on the streets the next day.

  9. There’s the performative knee-jerk reaction. At least it only costs €10m. Could be worse.

  10. Money money money. Does the Garda need 10million to have 2 officers walking up and down Talbot Street?

  11. That’s the problem with this country, most European countries are proactive and see problems far off in the distance and act accordingly in plenty of time. But we’re reactive, we sit around with our finger up our arse doing just the bare minimum and the second there’s an issue then it’s a major crisis and it’s all hands on deck. Such a piss poor way to run a country.

  12. FG Incentivizing failure in exchange for a promise.

I doubt there is any legal requirements for how this money is spent and they’ll get more if they squander it. Why wouldn’t they give them an allowance for this overtime that could be billed for after the work is done? €10million just like that with no oversight, gone.

  13. Does Fine Gael have any policies that aren’t “throw money at it”?

  14. Asking our overworked Gardaí to work overtime is only going to cause more of them to leave the force.

Incidentally I think the concept of overtime is outdated. 35 – 40 hours per week gives a reasonable balance to your life, leaving time for family, hobbies, eating well, etc. Working long hours for an extended period of time just leads to burn out
