I received this letter in my post 10 days after I exchanged danish dollars for euros. ..Apparently the guy working at the exchange not only hates his job and people, he clearly can’t count .I feel this is not right – legally what would happen if I don’t agree to pay their mistake back?

Is it possibly fake?
Was it a registered letter? If not I wouldn’t do anything about it
Didn’t you notice the guy giving you 1080€ to much?

They would most likely write more letters first then orders to pay, possibly go to court directly or simply hire a debt collection company. This would ruin your Schufa rating and in the end you would have to pay a magnitude more than the 1080 Euro.
Do you have a receipt which documents the Transaction? And also does the exchange on the receipt show the Right amount, or is there the Same Mistake ? If you have an receipt which shows the right amount i would probably first of all Talk to a lawyer because it seems like you are in the Right position and before you Pay anything let them show you the camera footag
If it‘s real (check into this) look at it from the opposite perspective. If you noticed the next day that you had received less € than you were entitled to, should they be required to pay for your mistake?
If you are acknowledging that they gave you too much money and some poor guy made a mistake , why post about it and ask what could possibly happen if you keep the money since the error was on their end , are you asking people to help you get away with theft ? If you know it’s not your money and keep it that’s theft , just give it back and everyone would be happy ,
I think you are legally required to give them their money back since finders keepers logic doesn’t apply here , even if it was legal ( it’s not) why risk someone losing their job just that you could keep the money ?
Why would you say he hates his job and people? He works in customer service to pay his bills, would you be so delighted about this job if you worked there?
Return it please…..
Money is not only what you can buy with it, but also connected with your life, doings, morals, and culture.
I found out that I can’t and won’t keep/use money and things that aren’t rightfully mine, as the feeling of something’s not right never goes away afterwards.
More spiritual people might say “it weakens my soul”. Which, even as a pragmatic guy, weirdly sounds about right.
So, if you not really need the money desperately, just give it back. You might consider it a stupid mistake or one of not caring, or you might think about what you would like the recipient to do if roles were switched, in the end it doesn’t matter.
Give it back because it’s not yours.
