Can someone tell me what the purpose is of all these random bottles of water I see outside of people’s houses everywhere?

  1. It’s to discourage cats from peeing. It’s proven that cat’s will not in pee where there is clean/clear water nearby.

Dogs however don’t give a shit. But funnily enough, cat piss is a lot stinkier and more damaging than dog piss

  2. You see these a lot in Spain, even in Madrid. It’s to deter dogs from peeing on that spot. It’s believed that the reflection of sunlight (reflection caused by the bottle of water) derers them. Some believe it’s a myth and others swear by it.

    I personally think it works!

  3. And now I am super confused. I was told in Spain that it is simply to clean dog / cat piss. It’s hot most of the year. No rain. Piss stinks as hell. So they will put a bottle with water so you can rinse it off.
Please some Malta people we need explanation now.

  4. To stop tomcats making your wall stink. Tiger shit works too but people tread in it.

  5. It’s an old wive’s tale to supposedly stop cats or dogs from pissing on the wall. Total fucking bullshit and I can’t stand the idiots who actually think that it works, hence the fresh piss stain right next to the bottle

  6. It’s something at heart with maltese culture. It was a way to dissuade stray cats from peeing on your house facade.
Nowadays stray cats aren’t as frequently encountered as they used to, but the tradition lives on.

  7. As someone who encounters many of these when walking my dog, can confirm it is a total horseshite myth.

Like mentioned somewhere else, it almost attracts my dog to piss on them more because they stand out as something to mark.

  8. To scare cats away. I’m told it doesn’t work.

  9. From what I heard the idea is to leave a few out with the tops off and different levels of water in there and the variable noises as the wind passes over the top causes cats to go elsewhere.

Over time people just started putting out bottles of water with the lids on which is just a lump of plastic to a cat. So they’re all doing it wrong now anyway.

I’m not saying it would work, but that’s what I heard. 🙂
