Perhaps: when I was at school there was a lot of that kind of stuff going on. *However* we were also told by our teachers and parents that there were certain lines you absolutely did not cross, and we were disciplined if we did cross them. We did stuff like that because we didn’t know better, so our teachers tried to make sure we did know better in future.
