  1. More like Population Pentagon. Or if I squint, I see the Pope’s hat.

  2. Europe’s demographic poses many challenges. In many European countries such as Spain and Italy, the number of births in 2023 are less than half of what they were in 1964. In Spain’s case, they will have to admit more than 27.8 million immigrants from now to 2072, just to keep their population stable. I am not kidding. This is according to a 2022 study from their own national institute, where they also estimate the numbers of foreign-born immigrants will rise to constitute 36.5% of the population, up from the 15.5% they constitute now. It is crazy. For reference, the current Spanish fertility rate is at 1.16, which means each generation declines by 42% in absolute numbers.

Italy will have to do something similar if they want to survive. That’s why even Meloni want’s to give away 500,000 work permits to people from outside the EU. There will be no one left, otherwise.

Look at how Italy’s population pyramid is, and note how small it becomes. Italy’s fertility rate stands at 1.24 children born per woman, which means each Italian generation declines by 38% in absolute numbers.

  3. Is the surplus of young men down to immigration from outside the EU being more male? I don’t think that would account for the under 10s though

  4. I just noticed an interesting thing about the italian graphic. After the WW2, the fertility rate didn’t decrease constantly, it decreased significantly during 2 specific periods of time. The first one was during the last years of the “Years of Lead” (a period marked by violence and terrorism that ended after 1980), while the second one was during the last 10 years (we are facing a crisis and young adults struggle to get a job).

During the 30 years between the Years of Lead and 2013, the birth rate was stable. This means that it’s not that people don’t like children, they simply don’t want to have children if they are not sure to grant them a lifestyle at least equal to the lifestyle they got when they were young.

In case someone didn’t know, during the fascism, singles were forced to pay an extra tax. Also, it’s well known that poor people tend to give birth a lot of children because a lot of children dies due to illness during the first years.

  5. I was about to ask why there was a male surplus under the age of 50 but then I realized it’s immigration. I wonder how much skinnier the bottom of this would be without immigrants.

  6. If you’ve got a granny fetish, the EU is the place to be I suppose.
