Ukrainian hackers managed to obtain numbers of Russian sailors serving on warships and sent them wishes on their holiday, along with malware, according to the Ukrainian military’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR). And the wishes were not good wishes either.

“The sailors of the occupier’s navy received special wishes on the occasion of [Russian] Navy Day [July 30],” HUR reported via social media.

The sailors received a video with “wishes” via messaging apps. Most of them wrote back to say thank you before opening the video and were treated to Ukrainian drones and missiles attacking and sinking Russian warships, including the Moskva cruiser.

The message also contained malware that gave the hackers access to the data on the sailors’ phones, which have been downloaded to Ukrainian servers. According to HUR, these included confidential information.

Additionally, servers of three Russian government websites were attacked, and the video was also published there, HUR said.

It is uncertain what exactly the video contained, but parts of it may be incorporated in the video attached to the message posted on the social platform formerly known as Twitter, in which HUR further adds insult to Russian Navy’s injury.

Basking in the full glory of their achievement, HUR posted a video further mocking the Russian navy, not only for them falling for the trap but also containing some innuendo about the Russian sailors’ sexual orientation (as if sailors have not already heard enough of such japes).

Aside from images of the sinking of the Moskva cruiser and intercepted recordings of panicking Russian servicemen about to meet their doom and then a wreath floating on the sea at the end, the video is notable for its soundtrack, which includes the 1979 notoriously ultra-campy “Moskau” euro disco hit by the German Dschinghis Khan ensemble (along with a cover played on a recorder – if you are not yet familiar with the term “sh*ttyfluted”, you are better off that way), as well as a cover of the 1974 “El Bimbo” by the French euro disco (of course it had to be euro disco) Bimbo Jet group, which gained popularity worldwide for being used in the “Police Academy” franchise as the theme for the Blue Oyster Bar (if you do not know this one, it is highly recommended you do look that one up).

As the old saying goes, “trolling is a art”. And boy, did the Ukrainians troll the Russians viciously. Including Russia’s former PM and Putin’s former puppet President Dmitry Medvedev.
