  1. i wonder why people dont want to do a functionally below minimum wage job?

must be brexit. wasnt a problem when migrants could be manipulated into it.

  2. Downvote me to hell, but they need to charge some kind of health and social care tax (in place of National Insurance) to pensioners in retirement. Maybe then, we could have a properly funded care sector – paying £10.42ph as a wage for this type of work is ridiculous.

  3. I had a bit of an argument just a few years ago over on facebook. A local business was going out of business, people were being made redundant. One woman was absolutely desperate for work. I, a disabled with a care package, know care agencies are always looking for carers. I also know not everyone is suited to be carers, but I figure, if you’re in a customer facing role where you deal with complaints, you’ve got transferrable skills to be a carer at least for a short time. So I reply and say, these care agencies are looking for carers, that could tie you and other people over for a few months if you don’t fancy it long term. This woman, who is absolutely desperate for a job, talking about falling into rent arrears so something is better than nothing, replies saying “I went to university and have a degree, I think I can do a bit better than carer”. Which was such an awful reply I didn’t know where to begin.

But that’s the state of things really. A horrible cycle. Care is so under valued that nobody wants to be a carer, care agencies treat the staff they already have like dogs bodies because they’re so short staffed, the pay is poor even when the agencies charge top whack because the government allows them to. Everybody goes to university looking for a good paying job and leave thinking they’re so above care work they’d rather risk rent arreas than lower themselves into working in care. And the end result is disabled and elderly people suffer living a poor to nonexisting quality of life.
