  1. Those are actually the broke guys. It’s weekend plates you can only drive on the weekends with the car (saves on taxes and registration)

  2. Usually it’s a guy who could barely afford the car but not the import tax..these red plates are as was mentioned above “weekend warrior” plates amd you pay 50% of the import tax .. so no, not rich guys but guys who want to act “bling” but the wallet screams “I can’t handle this”

  3. It means they voted for the labour party. They get some complementary Miriam Dalli glow-in-the-dark stickers & a red number plate signed by Robert Abela

  4. I like how everyone is saying its for people who can’t afford the full tax, even tho it doesn’t make sense to pay the full tax if you only drive the second car on weekends lmao

  5. Interesting. This could be something for me. I’m working from home usually and would need it only for the weekends. I can do my weekly shopping Saturdays and then to to beaches etc.

Is it only for Saturday and Sunday? Or only Sunday?

  6. Man the level of coping on this thread is unreal.

To answer your question its for weekend cars. You pay less reg tax and license fees but can only ride it on weekends and public holidays. Needs to be garaged any other day of the week.

You don’t need to be rich to own a 15 year old 530D. But you can still like it enough to only drive it on weekends.

  7. There’s normal plates, black plates and red plates.

Black plates are “vintage” cars i.e cars over 30 years old. Should be kept in good condition, unless you know someone, and very limited modifications can be done on it. Limited to 2000km per year. Road tax is EUR8 per year and insurance is EUR60, third party only.

Red Plates are weekend warriors, usually on cars with high emissions. Insurance is still paid in full but road tax is slashed. The car is also subject to a reduced import tax upon importation. Can be taken out on Friday evenings or the eve of a PH and has to be in by 6am the next working day iirc.

  8. I saw a fucking yaris and a corolla on red plates last time hahaha

  9. It’s the “holiday car”. A lot of Maltese have a regular car and a “holiday car”. This one are only allowed to drive of public holidays and are cheaper as tax. Normally it’s a massive engine cars, that are with an enormous tax, so this way, people are halving their tax

  10. Wannabe rich guys, who can’t afford the tax so they can only take those cars out on the road between friday evening and sunday night.
