    On May 27, 2000, 31-year-old Cork-born Justin attended the rally where all the flag-waving and cheering took place in Passau in Bavaria.

    But his defence about the ignorance of the dangerous politics of the group when he heard the speeches quoting Hitler and attacking the Jews was:

    “I don’t speak any German, it’s not even to talk about my German being so bad so I can’t say that that didn’t occur because I wouldn’t have known who the speaker or others were or wouldn’t have known what was being said.

    “I was simply invited in my capacity as a pro-life spokesperson and I attended that meeting as I attend any meeting.”

    Eventually Barrett did seem to reveal some regret for attending the rally – but only slightly.

    “I didn’t inquire too deeply into what the organisation was about. And I am still taking it on the assumption that this party is what it is said to be, maybe it’s not even but on the assumption that it is what people say it is, well then it’s unfortunate that I attended it.

    “But I don’t bear any responsibility for having made what I believe was a relatively small error of judgment,” he said.
