Wondering why weird American converts to Orthodoxy who bring their weird baggage with them are being posted in this sub?
Summary:
Wacko American right-wingers are joining the Orthodox Church in the US, hoping it’s the ultra-conservative greener pastures they’re looking for. It’s not. European Orthodox (Greeks, Romanians, Ukrainians, etc) are culturally similar to Catholics. But these Americans are bringing their right-wing baggage with them. Some of them are former fundamentalist Evangelicals/Pentecostals. Others are just “toxic masculine” right-wingers. There’s a culture shock between the European immigrants who are chill and the wacko Americans.
Also, the global Orthodox Church is very fragmented. Outside the core countries (Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russia, etc), the national/regional churches have set up dioceses for their diaspora. So, the Russian church, and Greek Church, and Romanian Church, etc, have overlapping jurisdictions in the Americas, instead of forcing all Orthodox in the US or Canada or Brazil into one Church. And the Russian church in America has most embraced these wacko Americans.
You still won’t find them in Greek churches in New York or Chicago. But you’ll find them in Russian churches in heavily WASP areas of the US, like the South. You’ll hear such wacky out-of-this-planet stories about WASP converts. I heard about this one parish somewhere on Pentecostal territory, where they were all Pentecostal converts, and the women only wore long dresses and never got they hair. Yeah, that’s the wacky shit some of the Americans are bringing with them.
