Do you think that a couple of dozen of tall trees in big pots placed in Eleftherias square in Nicosia would solve / improve the lack of greenery there?

2. Trees are not fairing well when planted in pots unless they get at least yearly root management care. Especially for large older trees it would be silly to place them like that. It would be better if the green spots get converted into flower beds and trees planted directly in ground.

6. You can’t grow trees in pots. Tree that provide enough shade need fairly big spread of the ground for their roots.

   Eleftheria square is a giant frying pan during the summer. It was a horrible project from the beginning and serves no one.

9. Not feasible for the long term. Trees like to spread their roots horizontally so a potted tree will eventually be unhappy and start to die if its not pruned and managed often. Which is counter intuitive because you would want a large enough canopy to provide significant shade by each tree, something you won’t achieve in a pot. Also irrigation, will we have the black irrigation piping suspended on top of the pots from pot to pot? That’s going to look ugly, or the alternative is a truck comes by and waters them which feels very 1990 and also unreliable. They should have been in the ground with proper systems in place to manage them, but alas the Cyprus government is not accustomed to dealing with such intricacies. They are worried the roots will break their precious cement, but if grown properly, they won’t, but that requires spending money to manage them.
