It’s gonna be one of these threads. Time to get some popcorn .
( i mean they should stay online, but that won’t happen with the Greens who will be very likely be a part of the next government).
Did I miss a turn ? When did the FDP become open to keeping nuclear ?
Finally the daily nuclear thread!
Germany: I will pretend I did not see that
What is it with Germany and Nuclear energy? It seems completely irrational.
Austria already made the stupid decision to not have nuclear power decades ago and now we import nuclear power from our neighbours.
We need a study that takes into account that keeping these reactors would cost money which would have to be provided by the public since the energy companies have already said that they wouldn’t do it on their own.
So the question is: how can we safe more CO2? By financing these reactors and phasing out coal earlier _or_ putting the money into other measures to transform the economy (subsidies for electric cars, renewables etc.).
How do you qualify as an Intellectual? Like, do you get a nametag or something to identify you?
The prices in Europe for energy are skyrocketing even thou there is Nuclear powerpant in my country they sell it to our neighbour
I always thought that Nuclear Plants and especially molten salt reactors would be the best way for germany to get rid of coal energy.
No, the best thing to have now is an energy crisis. It will cause people the reconsider why they are using it.
How long do you want to keep them running? The three German NPPs scheduled for shutdown by this end of year have been operating for 36 years and were designed 50 years ago. The remaining three, scheduled for shutdown by the end of next year, will have been operating for 33 years. The French only shut down their Fessenheim plant after 42 years, a whole series of reportable incidents, a prolonged legal battle, the discovery of falsified certifications, and a large “reparation” (or, ransom) payment to the owners. That’s a bit much for my taste.
Why am I not surprised that *Welt* is behind this?
I love the Green Party, but this „Atomkraft Nein danke“ bullshit, is really gonna fuxk us over soon.
Shit, I guess I’m an intellectual then, since I support nuclear
to explain whats going on. basically back in the days our conversion from fossile fuel to renewable energy was rapidly advancing to a point where we technically on paper could have phased out all nuclear power plants. when fukushima hit we vowed since it was working so well might as well get rid of it entirely. as for why there is in a distant future no place for nuclear energy is that as of now, radioactive waste is still a pretty big pain in the ass so until we are able to maybe rocket or earth sky slingshot the waste off this planet for a country like germany nuclear energy is a huge problem.
Now if we predicted that we could phase out fossile and nuclear energy in the near future and now that future is here and we cant, something must have gone wrong right?
for one tech in renewable energy hasnt advanced as fast as we wished for and then one major clean energy source is winds at sea. building off shore wind turbines sounds amazing doesnt it? and we got enough sea…
2 problems.
1. nature, offshore fucks with nature hard.
2. those idiot southern germans dont like long distance power lines and I shit you not to quote them not wanting it: “it ruins the view.”
that shit was the smaller issue. so whats the bigger issue?
there is a law in germany that regulates the distance of wind turbines to housing. its not based on noise distance or anything. its based on view. wind turbines ruin the view….
the needed distance + german population density basically no wind turbines at all. matter of fact we have a shitload of old wind turbines that could be replaced with better more efficient turbines and the money is there for upgrades but that distance law basically doesnt allow you to take down an old one and replace it.
so for now until we fix the law we need to keep more nuclear power plants for longer than wanted or anticipated. yes we knew it was a problem ages ago and we didnt fix it. why? because the bastards who refused to have wind turbines even in seeing distance are the same who vote for those to keep that specific law up. to quote the zoomers: fuckin boomer.
tl;dr: had insane renewable energy growth very early on, things happened and that slowed down. now we keepin the nuclear power plants for longer.
Being against nuclear power in this day and age in a western nation has no good justification anymore. They may not be the perfect solution but they are a great until a sustainable green solution with less risks can be fully implemented.
There is no way Germany is doing that. Even if it would make sense. It would be politically suicide. We have a very strong movement against nuclear. That’s part of the reason why we had the first Green Party in Europe. A green-red government decided to stop nuclear, Merkel stopped that again, but after Fukushima, she also made laws and decided we have to stop using nuclear energy. It. Will. Not. Happen! There is no way. No party will Touch it again with a ten foot pole.

What are they replacing nuclear with?
