Headline makes it sound like this is over Christmas itself.
In the article an admission that: “the PM is understood to be mulling a post-festive squeeze as early as *December 27*”
The Sun framing this as a Christmas (25/26) lockdown to draw people into the article.
The media should be accountable for the damage they’re doing to people’s mental health. Another tactic of using people’s legitimate anxiety over Christmas plans as a tool for content creation and not even hiding it.
“We… errr… BAH… um… will not be taking any further measures to limit the spread of coronavirus. Following… ehh… ‘discussions’ with colleagues in the parliamentary Conservative party, I have decided that the uh… Great British public must show Herculean strength in getting on with their lives despite this dreadful virus. Rule Britannia. Good save the etc. Blitz spirit.”
Any new variant that arrives that is more transmissible will surely generate this response now as a precaution, since we tend to assume similar severity to previous variants.
It is just a fact that we can only learn about transmissibility a few weeks before we learn about severity, which leaves me pessimistic about the future.

Based on the numbers today and the evidence from S.Africa we may well be past the peak of infections by then anyway, although reporting over Christmas might make it harder to tell.
