Hello to everybody, I’m just a tourist passing by cyprus and I did a trip pretty much around cyprus, a couple of things are not clear to me.

1) what does the sign on the side of the mountain mean (north of Nicosia)
2) why the country (especially the north) is so much full of trash all around?
3) went to Famagosta and kirenia. Why are they building so much houses without real infrastructures? Just entire cities worth of housing without for example a beach nearby (especially in kirenia district).
4) I went to a 4 star hotel north of famagosta, it wasn’t that much expensive, at least for me (something like 130 euros for a double, for 3 nights all included) why there are at best 3 other people in the entire building? Shouldn’t it be peak season?
5) went to salamis ruins, why is everything so badly maintened? Explanatory posters were in shambles or nearly unreadable, I got lost a couple of times in the site

Just for clarification, I don’t want to Diss your country, I really enjoyed my time here, did plenty of stuff and people were really friendly, I will probably come back again.

  1. Ahh my beutiful cyprus. What have they done to u… this post makes me want to kill myself. Lets unite fellas, stop the bleeding.

  2. >Just for clarification, I don’t want to Diss your country

Bro you went into an occupied zone …you dont diss someones country per se in that case, you diss their illegal/incompetent management . So all that is expected/unrelated to the actual country of cyprus (talking management-wise not geography-wise). If you had visited the actuall country (south) , thats day and night difference. Respectfully, another foreigner who loves that country.

  3. You do realise this is an occupied area. Have not read anything before coming to Cyprus?
Ever heard of the Turkish invasion?

  4. Ah as a northerner I ask the same questions to myself. Also, I haven’t been back since 2019 and oh my fucking god this place is like a different planet now…

  5. >1) what does the sign on the side of the mountain mean (north of Nicosia)

It means commando, made by the Turkish military that illegally occupies Cyprus.

    >2) why the country (especially the north) is so much full of trash all around?

North of Cyprus has been pretty much the same since 74, no proper management or development. Just exploitation of the land and resources. Its extremely corrupt and disorganised. Why is it this way because its a puppet state of Turkey and public officials are corrupt greedy cunts.

  6. 1- “Komando” is a special forces unit, at every year when newcomers are joining to TC army, best ones are selected to this unit. Their training ground is these mountains and there is an historical part of these units at these areas. So they marked it.

2- One of the reason is education and the other is that most of the people doesn’t care. Other than that, TC councils are having difficulties to finance rubbish collections. The old law only allowed them to charge around 120 TL per building per year. Not even 30-40 EUR. And because of the fluctuations at exchange rates, many council went into deeper issues. EU made a facility to keep and process the rubbish around where you see the writing on the mountain, it was planned to hold 20 years of rubbish but it reached to its limit in 4 years without rural councils. They can not afford to bring their rubbish here. So, rubbish is everywhere.

3- There are demand and it is cheaper to buy a home from North Cyprus compared to surrounding countries. Also life is cheaper.

4- Which hotel was that? Because it is interesting.

5- Go back to my answer and change councils to Culture office. They don’t have a huge budget and the budget distributed loses its value in the first 3-4 months.

  7. You should see what a shithole it was before the opening of the check points. GC money kinda upgraded the north

  8. The north government doesn’t give a shit about the state of the land or the people in it. They just care about having a military in it.

  9. >what does the sign on the side of the mountain mean (north of Nicosia)

It shows how bored the Turkish army commanders are that they play with stones like kids.

    >I went to a 4 star hotel north of famagosta, it wasn’t that much expensive, at least for me (something like 130 euros for a double, for 3 nights all included) why there are at best 3 other people in the entire building? Shouldn’t it be peak season?

They make money with casinos and money-laundering; the hotel is just a means to do so. Peak season is at New Year and (what an irony..) during the Islamic holidays where the Turkish people come over for gambling.

  10. Here are the reasons;

**Isolation:** Northern Cyprus is not recognized by the United Nations and is isolated in the international arena. This situation prevents Northern Cyprus from trading and investing, and weakens its economy.

**Small population:** The population of Northern Cyprus is approximately 300,000. This small population is not enough to develop the economy and infrastructure of Northern Cyprus.

**High unemployment rate:** The unemployment rate in Northern Cyprus is approximately 15%. This high unemployment rate has a negative impact on the economy and infrastructure of Northern Cyprus.

**High inflation rate:** The inflation rate in Northern Cyprus is approximately 10% (official, real one is above the 90%). This high inflation rate lowers the living standards of the citizens of Northern Cyprus.

These reasons why Northern Cyprus is poor and has weak infrastructure are preventing the economic and social development of Northern Cyprus. In order to solve these problems, Northern Cyprus needs the support of the international community and to effectively use its own internal resources.

  11. All of your questions are related to the occupied side of Cyprus. The government has no control over what the Turkish who are the ones in control are doing. This has been the case since 1974.

As for the trash in other areas of the island is due to waste mismanagement. If you are referring to sea debris then that is mainly due to our location in the Mediterranean.
