The Ukrainian Counteroffensive Is Not an Action Movie

  1. fwiw: I assume a lot of the “not fast enough!” chatter is just a subtler version of the Ruskie propaganda “counteroffensive failing!” copium.

When it’s in U.S. media I assume it’s also part of the lazy “everything is a horse race” churn of our hellish 24/7 “news” (infotainment) cycle.

  2. Are they past the dragon teeth yet?

It’s frustrating we see one bomb here or there. I wish they could lob 100 at a time

  3. It will be no cake walk and many good men will die for freedom, just like in WW2.

  4. Unlike in the north, Russia actually used this time to hunker down and even a bad army can pose a challenge when they’re entrenched… and have so many minefields.

While it is slower than many would like, they’re also taking land while still probing for a weak spot. The west generally has all the toys needed to force an opening if needed, Ukraine won’t have that for a while and in the numbers needed for a swift collapse.

  5. Unless u like special effects then its awesome to watch them blow up ammo dumps and bridges

  6. Tom brings up great points, as always. I expect nothing less from a former Naval War College professor.

Ukraine’s offensive will continue to unfold. The West should be beyond planning for supporting Ukraine’s next offensive, and should be seriously debating how to support the offensive after that.

I’ll stick to criticizing my own country as an American. We’ve been too slow and too reactionary. We need to be more proactive. We’re not, and it’s costing Ukrainian lives.

“The history of failure in war can almost always be summed up in two words: ‘Too late. ‘” Gen. MacArthur.

  7. Remember how we were marveling at the way Ukrainians were holding off the Russians by digging in and grinding them down. Works in reverse as well. Entrenched positions, regardless of the quality of the soldier, are always going to be hard to push through.

  8. The counteroffensive is no picnic, although obviously the soldiers will end up eating outdoors quite a lot.
