  1. These lot are so removed from reality it’s unbelievable

  2. “Work and pensions secretary could hold ‘golf sale’ signs for minimum wage and be grateful”, say over-50s.

  3. The Tory economic miracle in action, folks. Look forward to spending your dotage running tickets for Uber Eats.

  4. Even more laughable when just four days ago the PM basically told cyclists to suck it up, “I’m on the motorists’ side.” Have to assume the DWP wants over 50s on bikes so they’ll get run over and never have to draw a pension.

  5. I have to say that initially I thought it was from the Onion…

    but no.

  6. Any MP suggesting this should be made to go and do it for a few weeks as proof of concept.

  7. Or they could actually prevent ageism by applying effort, fines, and if necessary custodian sentences, then the over 50s could just go get a job like a regular person.

The main problem is it isn’t taken seriously. For example this sub is full of ageism, day after day, and when it’s reported to the mods they ignore it. If it were racism instead, transphobia, homophobia etc they’d be handing out lifetime bans.

  8. How far away are we from an actual response to a food shortage of “Let them eat cake”?

They really are so far removed from reality these days it’s kind of funny, in the same way you’d start laughing if you got home after a day of disasters to find your house burned down.

  9. He’s a dick. At that age your hips and knees are starting to go and you need to avoid this kind of work.

  10. >According to the Cabinet minister, employers are responsible for creating an inclusive work environment for older employees. This should include fostering working cultures which aren’t “all about politics and all that kind of stuff”, though he noted that older people can have the life experience to cope with such environments.

I can’t figure out what Stride’s point is here. Any ideas?

If you’re a politician then sure I guess your work culture is all about ‘politics and stuff’. But I can count on one finger the number of jobs I’ve had that had any type of political work culture, it just doesn’t seem like that it’s prevalent enough to be a real problem.

Maybe investing in adult education so people are able to change careers easier would be a better idea than relying on the gig economy to save us?

  11. Absolutely they should if they don’t have the skills for an alternative.

  12. There’s two rather large parts here (three if you count the SoS being a bellend) which need addressing.

It says in the article that there’s a growing chunk of economically inactive people, which is presumably who this is aimed at. I’d bet a significant number of them are there through choice, so they’ve decided they’re happy with their lot as things stand.

The other part is that the jobs we’re talking about are the ones that get young people started, which seems like a really bad idea to soak up from where I’m sitting.

  13. Whenever a Tory talks about ‘older people getting back into the workforce’ what they really mean is weaning the poors off of the idea of retirement with a state pension so that old Tories who are already financially secure can go on three cruises a year instead of two.

  14. Remember the early David Cameron days where anyone who had an issue with zero hour jobs was screamed down by people insisting that the gig economy could only ever be massively beneficial to students and young people or people looking to make some extra cash?

Where are those people now as we descend into recommending zero hour gig economy jobs to people who have had 30 years expertise in the workforce?

  15. FIRST UP AGAINST THE WALL WHEN THE REVOLUTION COMES

    Douglas Adams

  16. So they’re now publicly giving up on the idea that work should engaging and/or well paid? At least they’re being honest about how little they care. That’s an improvement… I think.
