The announcement by the Mayor of Famagusta, Simos Ioannou, about the participation of Turkish Cypriots, among them the so-called Turkish Cypriot Mayor of Famagusta, Suleiman Ulutsai, in this year’s anti-occupation event of the Municipality, which will take place on Saturday, brought reactions.
In his statements on state television, Mr. Ioannou said that the participation of Turkish Cypriots in this year’s event is something that is being done for the first time and demonstrates the will for a solution.
Mr. Ioannou said that he had contacted President Christodoulidis on the matter. “The President of the Republic was aware of the invitation of the Mayor of the Turkish Cypriots of Famagusta, Suleiman Ulutsai, to the anti-occupation campaign”.
At the same time, he said that the invitation to Ulutsai was addressed by the chairman of the cultural committee of the Municipality of Famagusta, Nikos Karoullas, in consultation with the Municipality.
A group of 12 Turkish Cypriots from the Othellos choir will also take part in the event, which will perform songs about reunification and peace.
In its statement, the EDEK described as unacceptable the action of the Mayor of Famagusta to invite the pseudo-mayor of occupied Famagusta to the Municipality’s anti-occupation event.
As he reports, “the so-called “mayor” in question has even usurped the town hall of the occupied city and installed himself inside the building and applauds the settlement of Famagusta, which Turkey and the occupying regime are proceeding with, in violation of UN Security Council resolutions ».
“It is not possible, in an anti-occupation event, to invite an illegal institution of the pseudo-state, which rose to this position through illegal procedures and is not even covered by the 1960 Constitution, as misleadingly claimed by some, including the Mayor of Famagusta”, notes the EDEK and denounces the procedure followed by the Mayor of Famagusta, “that is, to bring the Municipal Council before the already completed decisions, to proceed with the invitation to the pseudo-mayor and then to invite the Municipal Council to ratify it, while the Municipal Committee responsible for the anti-occupation event Council, has not met for seven years.”
“The Mayor of Famagusta and those who endorsed his actions have downgraded the event from anti-occupation to bi-community, sending wrong messages to occupying Turkey, internally and externally, and this cannot be accepted by EDEK, which will not participate in the event,” the announcement concludes.
