  1. TIL The Daily Star is still an actual thing, that still exists, like actually really exists, no word of a lie, it has a website and everything. Mind Blown.

  2. It should be the day you can have your income taxed. If you’re working and paying tax then you should have a say In how your tax money is spent.

  3. I don’t. I think it should be raised to 25 or even higher than that if anything. There should also (I know it’s not feasible) be an exam you need to pass before you can cast your vote. I know too many people who pay zero attention to politics but vote for the exact same party every election… and they’re so sure the party they’re voting for (which they’ve voted for their entire lives) is the right choice, is on “our” side, will do the right thing for us, and so on and so forth.

These days I just spoil my ballot. None of the parties we can vote for are going to fix the country anyway (if it can even be fixed at this point) and my area always majority votes for a party I’ll never vote for so even if I actually did vote, my vote counts for absolutely nothing.

  4. Too young to vote imo, I do sympathise with more politically aware kids who feel like they cant do anything but there’s such a diverse range of maturity at that age that I don’t think its a good idea

  5. Bad idea. The very few politically aware will be massively outnumbered by the idiots.

  6. I agree with giving the vote to the 16/17 year olds because I think of it as essentially adding a little more weight to the family as at that age it’s very likely that kids are going to vote the same way as the parents. Which makes allot of sense when we have a demographic crisis.

  7. So over 65% don’t think they should be able to vote. Sounds like a clear enough majority.

  8. I disagree, brains aren’t fully developed until mid 20s.

  9. Let me put this way. At 16 years old the government deemed me old enough to be kicked out my father’s house, and to live independently. It deemed me old enough to pay council tax, to have a tenancy agreement, to pay bills, and to work. But not old enough to have a vote.

Old enough to give them money, but not to get a say on how I want it to be spent.

  10. I find it awfully strange that other things are having the age raised but something as serious as voting is being considered to be lowered. If anything with less and less 16 year olds being in employment where they could feasibly pay tax, we’re at the point in history where it makes the least sense to drop it.

  11. Biggest problem with democracy is how the idiots and easily mislead outnumber the educated and well informed

This would just make that worse

And if that doesn’t get my enough downvotes, I’ll throw this in. I’d support some kind of test before voting to make sure the person actually knows what they’re voting on.

  12. If this happens then I am starting the Hoodie tracksuit party.

  13. not for me. I don’t want lying politicians trying to brainwash even younger kids so they’re primed to vote a particular way once they turn 16.

  14. They are not tax payers and would all just vote for the party that gave them most “free shit”.

However the Tories would never get in again. Assuming they actually voted unlike most other Gen Z.

  15. IMHO it’s not the age of the voters that’s the issue. It’s the age of the politicians! Time you some younger blood.

  16. Definitely needs to happen for the GE as it’s already policy for other elections iirc.

After Labour’s victory they’ll have a majority in favour of lowering the voting age; the right wing press as well as the Karens will go ballistic, attempting to spin more people voting = bad for democracy.

  17. We deem 16 year olds to be responsible under the law, work for a living and pay tax – plenty of matters affect this demographic and the idea that voting is too much of a cognitive task for them is hilarious. If you’re a 16 year old who works, you should vote.

Anyone who’s spent more than a few hours in the real world knows that the phrase ‘with age comes wisdom’ is the biggest load of shit ever.

  18. Lower it and add a really really easy verbal comprehension test. The boomers I know would vote for it to screw over the “young people” and then fail the test themselves.

  19. Lower the age. Get young people introduced to politics as early as possible. It is the only way to raise engagement. Allow schools to help structure it.

I am a teacher. I work with young people. They are no more stupid than the majority of the population.

Lowering the age helps spread democracy and gives young people a chance of actually getting engaged.

Edit: There is a stronger argument for capping the voting age than preventing an age reduction.

  20. I don’t think it should be lowered to 16. I also think their pay checks shouldn’t be taxed.

  21. Excellent idea, but only if you do smoking, buying alcohol/porn and driving cars and lorries and busses at the same time. They are either responsible enough to be adults and make adult choices or not.

  22. If people who believe the earth is flat are allowed to vote I see no reason why the immaturity of youth should be a barrier.

  23. If you want to divide and, ahem, persuade a demographic in a particular way, then bringing the modern, over socialized and under informed portion of the population into the fold is the way to go.

  24. Is that because the under 18s don’t realised its totally pointless then yet LOL?

  25. It’s interesting. I was 14 when Brexit happened. I remember being 15 and the discussions in class were about how the voting age should stay since the 15 and 16 year olds in the class were discussing how they didn’t feel they had enough experience to vote for the right people. I’m not 16 anymore so I don’t know if it’s the same.

  26. That 3rd of Brits should have their voting rights revoked.

  27. No one younger than me should have the vote.

    Also, no one older.

  28. If we arbitrarily cut off voting age so 16 year olds can’t vote why not ban over 80 year olds from voting

I’d argue a 17 year old is a lot more informed and aware of todays world than a 85 year old who is out of touch with society, technology

  29. I wonder how a country would look if you had to sit an IQ test to cast a vote, bottom 50% percentile don’t get to vote.

A dystopian nightmare but I’d like to be a fly on the wall.

  30. Most 16 year olds don’t know their arsehole from their elbow. So no.

  31. If you can pay tax, can get married or join the armed forces, you should be able to vote

  32. 16 year olds don’t have a clue what they are doing you think they should vote? I was 16 only 4 years ago and I can tell you right now I glad I wasn’t able to vote.
