Demands to delay rises in the state pension age

  1. ‘Plans to raise the state pension age from 66 should be shelved because we are not living as long as previously expected, a new report has suggested.
Current plans would see the age at which people are eligible for the state pension go up to 67 by 2028, and then eventually to 68.’

  2. The entire purpose of raising the state pension age is to reduce pension expenditure. It always was exactly that, every other argument is a smokescreen. It was one of the big drivers behind “austerity” and remains a huge obstacle for Tories who want to minimise government spending. I predict that this lot will immediately kick in with all the counter arguments. People (not rich people who don’t need a state pension) don’t matter to this crowd. Money is everything in the Tory philosophy.

  3. Why’s Edna laughing so much? She’s over 67 by now surely? Unless she’s had a really tough life.

She needs to be a bit more concerned with her maskless daughter in that confined space. Won’t be laughing when she’s hooked up to a ventilator on Xmas day.

  4. I’m 38 now, and I do pay into my workplace pension scheme which my employer matches 6% of (wish that was higher) so I’ll get ‘something’ but I wouldnt be surprised if by the time I come to retire there isn’t any kind of state pension whatsoever to supplement that, and everyone will just be forced to live on whatever paltry amount they built up in their private workplace penions. I’m lucky to be a medium-high earner so I can put in a decent chunk, and I’ll increase that again next year when I pay off my plan 1 student loan. For a lot of people who are low earners, they’ll retire with pretty much fuck-all though. It’s going to be a really grim situation for our generation when we reach that age. It’s such an obvious crisis on the horizon.

  5. We need to at least acknowledge that people are living a lot longer and require significant care as a result. The state pension is not suitable in a society where the elderly population has risen so sharply and are living for thirty or more years beyond retirement age. The state pension is a great concept but it needs to work for the society we have now, not the one that existed when it was introduced.
