As a Croat who is both a philosemite and a polanophile I am unironically a bit bummed over the whole ordeal.
I forgot how it started, but as usual it was PiS pushing some law that upset Jews, who are also upset about many crimes in post-war Poland against them not being well known (for all my love of history, I myself was unaware of them before this mess).
Either way, as always when emotions get heated you don’t really get a healthy argument, and you end up with heaps of angry people complaining the other side is some form of evil or unable to see their own crimes, and sadly many people from both sides who have prejudice against the other use this as a platform to vent and spread their hate. One side accuses the other of collaborating with the Nazis, the other of collaborating with the Nazis’ allies, the Soviets, and so on.
In the end, we’d all be well to remember that Jews were the single largest victims of Nazis, but that despite there having been collaborators among the Poles, Poland was the nation that collaborated the least and offered the most genuine resistance against the Nazis, and that the Poles were their second biggest victims in total. Any other nation in occupied Europe was much more in cahoots with the Nazis than the Poles, by massive levels of magnitude.
Jews wouldn’t have been so plentiful if Poland hadn’t been leagues more tolerant than historically and deeply antisemitic empires like Germany and Russia. This however does not apologise any anti-semitic crimes committed before or after the war against the Jews, and I can’t fathom why it would be hard for Poland to deeply decry them as they had happened under a communist occupation regime.
Seriously people should just chill, recognise they were both historically not just victims of Nazism, but Russo-German expansionism and chauvinism in general, and of course see common cause in their current fight for democracy and freedom in their own countries.
