It’s inconvenient to remember we are putting animals lives at risk for sport, entertainment and gambling. Is it something we could ever leave in the past?

Ah yeah but it’s some craic etc.
Lads need an excuse to dress up like Peaky Blinders, ladies need an excuse too.
Thank fuck they get so much money from the government too!
The statistic is pretty meaningless without proper interrogation.
How many horses ran in a race over that period? What’s the injury rate off track – as far as I know it’s pretty high regardless.
If Horse Racing didn’t exist, none of these animals would exist. They’d be extinct.
Its coz their hooves slip off the rails.
Maybe if we gave them more money?
Do people in Ireland eat horse meat?
Pretty sure the nauseating fucks with mammy and daddy fund, wearing their garish race horse day gear, don’t give one solitary fuck about animal welfare.
Let yourself gooooooooo
Wild horses don’t lay down on a bed of flowers and fade into a peaceful slumber after a long life prancing through meadows.
They get snagged and develop infections or break a bone and die of starvation after days wailing in pain or contract debilitating diseases that could be cured with a simple antibiotic.
It’s not a sport and I’m tired of jockeys being nominated for sportsperson of the year. You were born small and can whip an animal. So impressive, fair fucks to you.
If you took gambling away from football, rugby, GAA, tennis, golf etc. tomorrow morning, those sports would survive with little to no impact.
If you took gambling away from horse racing tomorrow morning, the “sport” would cease to exist by noon. It’s just a hobby for rich plebs, while bookies feed on problem gamblers sitting in bookies and gambling online all day.
Do you think horse welfare would improve if you banned racing horses or all horse sport?
Horses are better looked after than probably any other animal on the planet, certainly the best looked after large animal anyway, in fact a lot of them are better looked after than a lot of people are.
How many cows, sheep, pigs have died in Ireland in the past decade?
Horses are looked after so well because there’s a highly lucrative industry built around them. There’s over 10,000 people employed in some capacity in the horse sport industry in Ireland alone, to look after the 100k or so horses in the country.
Banning horse sport would likely cause the thoroughbred horse to go virtually extinct, they are high maintenance animals and would certainly cause horse welfare outcomes to collapse as you would no longer have an industry full of experienced professionals, and wealthy investors/owners to pay for their very expensive upkeep.
The sport is not perfect and could be improved from a welfare perspective but arguing for it’s outlawing demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of horses and is not in any horse’s best interest.
I would go so far as to say you have rocks in your head if you think that it’s a good idea.
