>Perceptions of public safety have deteriorated significantly in Dublin in recent years, with that decline under way long before the pandemic began in early 2020 and having continued since then, research shows.
>Studies commissioned by business representative group Dublin Town reveal the sharpest falls in perceptions of safety in the city centre occurred between 2016 and the start of 2020.
A very important section of the article that goes against what some here regularly say, which is that people are overreacting and that things are just being over-reported and the problem isn’t that bad.

I’ve lived in Dublin for around 15 years.
I used to work in Temple Bar/Talbot street and a few other places.
It has 100% gotten worse/less safe over the past decade.
Dublin was a safer place 10 years ago and the lockdowns accelerated the decline of Dublin. You could even see it walking the streets of Dublin after the lockdowns, the streets were covered in filth and rubbish.
Running a country is very difficult and I think politicians get an enormous amount of unjustified stick and disgusting abuse. That said basically every metric bar gdp and employment have declined over the last decade+. There are obviously things beyond the control of government but it is really undeniable at this stage that either through incompetence or ideology fine Gael have simply failed to administer the country in a manner beneficial to the people of the country and they should not be in government anymore.
Tell us you were born in the 90s and didn’t experience Dublin in the 80s and 90s without telling us.
When will these bullshit articles stop ?
How odd that they can’t find any evidence to back up the perceptions.
Yeah its gotten bad these days, I think a large part of it most recently being a bunch of kids grew in to teens and teens to adults during lockdown. less social interaction, rise in some sort of tribalism and some being stuck at home with arguably less then ideal people.
I think a solution to this, although will take a long time and lots of money but to implement, cheap if not free social activities for youths. Sport centers, education, maker spaces, music, ect ect. From what I have seen Its just youngens have nothing to do and are left to sit on the side of the road with a lord of the flies feel, constantly pushing each other on to do more and more.
And I know we dont have great history with public things, any I knew growing up, or anything I have seen put out there in adult hood gets trashed with in like 2 weeks but still.
I dont know that’s just my own observation. I hope we get some sort of social responsibility or pride back..
Helen had been very entirely of late
Dublin seems to be getting most of the flak here, but its not just Dublin that has been heading down hill in recent years.
Pop down to Cork around Washington St and Grand Parade, the amount of drunks/junkies/homeless that are laid out there is intense. The Centra on Grand Parade in particular is a laugh-people are literally drinking cans and passed out in the chairs outside the shop.
Arthurs Quay in Limerick- the amount of teens looking for trouble around there in the middle of the day is a common sight. Its made worse when they decide to venture down to Castletroy to cause trouble.
And there are plenty of other small towns that have problems with anti social behaviour that don’t make the headlines. The lack of strong policing towards people who blatantly breaks the rules and put others in danger has allowed them to act with impunity. Judicial punishment means nothing to them as they have nothing to loose.
