  1. Why? If it is a suitable building and someone has the time and money to do it why not.

  2. Farmers gonna build entire fields of barns now.

We do need to sort out housing requirements, especially in rural communities where locals are being driven out by investors. But it needs to be done properly with thought and skill, not like this.

  3. I love how commentators on this policy believe they have any choice over the coming changes.

The reason the government is legislating this is not to provide more houses imo… It’s because they know farmers are already doing this without planning permission, and will continue to do so. So they might as well legislate for it, and try and have some oversight as opposed to watching as the planning system becomes untenable.

I work as a consultant alongside LAs on planning enforcement data, and my view is that the lists are getting too long for anyone to realistically hope to enforce the rules. If your LA had to go out today, and enforce their backlog of enforcement noitices, they couldn’t do it, even if they allocated their entire budget to planning, the upfront legal costs alone would bankrupt the council and by time a judgement was actually enforced by a county court, the 4 year window will have passed and people can re-apply for retrospective planning anyway.

  4. This exact situation was covered in Clarkson’s Farm wasn’t it, and the council’s position wasn’t particularly convincing.
