All scouts leaving South Korea camp as typhoon looms

  1. Looks like the UK management team made the right decision to get out over the last couple of days.

I suspect that the typhoon isn’t the only reason they’re evacuating, even though some of the initial issues have been somewhat mitigated.

  2. I know that the Jamboree is an important event for the Scouting movement, and that those who have the chance to go look forward to it greatly.

But equally, questions must be asked as to its sustainability. Can the migration of literally _thousands_ of young people, plus the necessary adults to supervise them, from across the world really be justified, especially as the vast majority will have travelled by air.

Heck, ITV news stated last week that there were not even enough direct flights from the UK to convey our entire contingent to South Korea, and other routes had to be found to get them there all at roughly the same time. Let’s think about that for a second, _we sent more people to South Korea than airlines could handle_. Thousands of them, all with identical branded camping gear produced specifically for a week of camping.

Even setting aside the inadvisability of holding a camping event in the middle of the host country’s typhoon season, do the benefits of the Jamboree really justify the carbon footprint?

  3. I am currently in South Korea near where the Scout’s camp was located. It is very oppressive hot weather and virtually impossible to do anything during the middle of the day. The AC is cranked up all the way and that makes it tolerable but in a tent with no AC would be horrendous. But well done to the Scout leaders who have made the best out of a bad situation.
