I was watching this on Youtube last night (their algorithm is weird as fuck, i dont watch nazi videos regularly lol) and I am flabbergasted.

Im from the Netherlands and I am stunned. Does that dude really have a Reichsadler on his jacket? Just casually strolling down Helsinki with nazi patches on his coat?

Why is the other dude doing a Hitler salute? Is that considered to be a normal thing? My eyes were about to roll out of my head. Why isnt he getting arrested? Or beat up?

But my main question, does Finland still have people who seriously believe in Nazism walking around? Are these people ironic in a really bad way, or is this real? Do you encounter these people on a regular basis?

If I move there, am I in danger of these people? Im a white woman from the Netherlands and just walking down the street I can pass easily as Finnish but I am still ‘a foreigner’ in their eyes, I guess, and since Finnish is difficult you will probably still hear an accent in my Finnish speaking for years to come.

If I didnt know this video was real I would guess I am watching a really weird sketch but its real and its weird as fuck to me.

  1. Seems like it. They are emboldened even further by people who defend their views. Most of them are useful idiots.

  2. Yeah, unfortunately Finnish neonazis have been pretty bold during the last ten years or so. They have been having meetings and marches and whatnot. Wearing nazi insignia publicly is not illegal in Finland, so one can wear a swastika armband for the supermarket if they want to.

Note: the rise of far right has been happening all over Europe, USA and Russia (the other leader of the infamous Wagner mercenary group, Dmitry Utkin, has SS tattoos on his neck.) So Finland is not alone in this.

  3. We don’t really take this stuff as seriously as we should as a nation. People are so comfortable “joking” about this shit that a lot of foreigners I’ve met were shocked by it.

We have this tradition called penkkarit. You can google it. When I was in upper secondary school (lukio) and penkkarit were happening, one of the sheets on the trucks said “arbeit macht frei” and the principal had to explain these grown people why that was fucked up. Shit like this all the time.

Independence day, 2018. The police made sure these people got to do their thing safely and without disturbance 👍

Our far right party Perussuomalaiset almost won our most recent election. They came second, barely. People in the party constantly “”get caught”” accidentally spewing Nazi talking points and hanging out with nazis. Or just being open nazis.
