West in no hurry with F-16s for Ukraine because it fears Russia – former top NATO general

  1. That would be shameful if the west allowed itself to be intimidated by Russia. After all, they have supplied ammo, rockets, tanks, IFVs, etc. etc.
Please, stop acting like little girls intimidated by a bully.
What the West should be afraid of is Russia winning.

  2. Fear will only provoke Putin- where is their courage??

  3. Remember when Leopard 2 tanks were supposed to be game changers? They weren’t. Too easily destroyed. All tanks are very vulnerable. The F-16 can’t take off or land from public roadways. It needs good runways. Good runways are way vulnerable.

I suspect the weapons they US and others are reluctant to simply win be shown be to be essentially useless in drone / mine / ATGM conditions. They don’t want it proven.

  4. The “West” is not a hivemind.

    “Russia” is not a hivemind.

It does seem like Ukraine has been given enough to maintain the status quo, but not enough to tip the scale.

  5. I just don’t understand why NATO is the slightest bit afraid of Russia. They are very similar to a chihuahua dog, a bunch of bark and very little bite if any. They should be put in their place.

  6. Last time I heard about the f 16, Ukraine only had like 8 pilots for the planes that spoke English needed for the training…

  7. Doing something tomorrow, will have no different results than doing it today. Unless you are in Ukraine, when you are being royally fucked every day. Do it now.

  8. ITT – People who think Governments are well oiled machines with the means and authority to endlessly pump out, supply and maintain a war machine in a foreign country.

  9. This is such fucking bullshit.

The world be such a better place if the world shared a fraction of Ukraine’s bravery.

  10. If doesn’t fear Russia, it fears Russian nuclear weapon.

After the war Ukraine has to do everything to regain its nuclear weapon – if not, next Russian invasions are only a matter of time.

    Only nuclear weapon deters Russia.

  11. Anyone complaining how long this is taking, have NO fucking clue how incredibly FAST it is. Contrary to Russia’s lies, we don’t just sell weapons to anyone. There’s so much red tape, our allies have found it easier and faster to build their own. Lend/lease cut thru a lot of that red tape, but not all of it.

  12. The West needs a strong leader. The West has been a day late and a dollar short on all the equipment supplied, and has consistently failed to provide equipment in sufficient numbers to make a difference, e.g., 31 Abrams tanks supplied after the offensive has been underway for months, and no F-16s until the offensive is over.

  13. Folks, stop taking what these former generals say as gospel.

As a “top NATO general” he was directly complicit in propping up Russia’s defiance of the West.

These retired generals want to stay relevant so they say what they think they should say (with some exceptions).

  14. We should fear how this will look from the future… dragging feet is lost UA lives…

  15. Russias does have one difficult aspect that is a worry. They are prepared to throw millions upon millions into a meat grinder without care for life. The west generally don’t follow this narrative.

  16. Again and again this happens and again and again the excuses get trotted out.

However preferable they are to the alternative the undeniable fact is Biden and his top officials are cowards and appeasors more interested in not provoking russia than helping ukraine.

And a lot of ukrainians have unnecessarily died because of that fact.

  17. American armchair general here….

I’m hoping the actual number of Ukrainians being trained on the F-16s, is much higher than publicly reported, and I’m thinking these pilots are going to be in shorter supply than the aircraft. I’m just a nobody, but it seems like there might be better results when they are deployed if Ukraine has first greatly increased its ability to rapidly and safely clear the minefields ahead of the major fortifications. I’d love to know what classified R&D and production is happening to increase Ukraine’s ability to rapidly and safely deal with mines, but until Ukraine has that capacity there will be huge losses as the advance is bogged down, trying to slowly clear mines or huge losses as the advance charges across the minefields without clearing them ahead of time. So the F-16s and pilots might be slow in rolling out, so they are in full force when Ukraine really does have the ability to cross those fields without huge losses.

  18. I see this article as a good thing. It is alerting the public to how this general feels. Now I imagine public questioning will prove effective to changing this. As far as we know they are working on it .. not being cowards.

  19. What does NATO have to fear? Ukraine has ground down the Russian claws. Finish pulling them out now before Russia can rearm itself.

  20. I think I heard same deliberations before tanks and before rockets and before HIMARS … How many times Ukraine needs to show that the most effective way of communicating with russia is punch in the face. They immediately start paying attention.

  21. It’s going to be a long time even if it’s agreed.

I’m guessing it takes a long time for their pilots to be certified on the F-16, hundreds of hours before they are combat ready. Even longer if they have to train new pilots.
