Hi all. I’ve lived in Finland for 8 years now (originally from the UK) but only just discovered this sub Reddit. Wanted to introduce myself and ask a question about those hellish creatures of which Finland has a plentiful supply…mosquitoes. I live with my family in Helsinki and am well acquainted with the scourge of mosquitoes that exists in the countryside but I have never had many issues with mosquitoes in Helsinki or any big city in Finland for that matter and I know they tend to stick to rural areas. However this summer we have been noticing that we are waking up with bites that seem to be consistent with mosquitoes, I have seen one or two flying around and we keep our windows and balcony door open at night due to the heat. Has anyone else living in Greater Helsinki ever had any issues with mosquitoes in Helsinki? I was worried it might be caused by bed bugs but I checked quite thoroughly and have yet to find any evidence of bed bugs. Even the bites did not match those typically inflicted by bed bugs but we’re more consistent with mosquito bites (if you can call them bites). Also checked weather reports and found a high risk of mosquitoes in Helsinki, very high risk of indoor pests and extreme risk of outdoor pests.

Wow! Can’t really tell anything of Helsinki situation as I only visit there every now and then myself, living quite a bit north from there.
Just surprised to hear that Helsinki might have a lot of mosquitoes right now when in my area this summer is among the least mosquito heavy summers in my memory. I’m not all that fond of those buggers and I’ve felt so blessed this year to not have seen them. Sure I have a few bumps made by them that I scratch occasionally but it’s nothing compared to years where I’ve had to stay awake at night trying to listen where that noise is coming from so that I could kill it.
But I guess the amount of mosquitoes is always constant and only the place where they appear varies. So thanks Helsinki for taking our mosquitoes this year.
This is first summer I noticed mosquitos are an issue. During spring/early summer it was nightmare. There was like swarm of them everytime I took the dog out following us and even the dog was bothered by them. If you stood on place for few minutes there was like 20 of them on your arms.
They have mostly disappeared now however and I haven’t has issues with them since like mid summer.
