This is only the beginning. Wait until they can restrict what your money can be spent on. Look up CBDCs
Fuck me.
Every time I think I can’t be surprised by any more scummy act on behalf of this government, something appallingly new comes out of the woodwork.
To garnish benefits, *benefits*, that are barely enough to survive, never mind live, on nothing more than a request from a utility company with no apparent due diligence at the very least….
I’m honestly surprised the bank ref when they pay benefits into the recipients account isn’t just “Fuck off and die already”…
And before anyone goes to pipe up about how they should pay their debts. The article gives an example where it was an incorrect debt claim, and if some company were able to go to your employer and say “He owes us money, so give us 25% of his pay” would you be happy with that process, without any opportunity to defend yourself against the claim or argue the amount was unreasonable?
I do think, though, maybe they should implement this for MPs, let everyone claim they’re owed money by the MP of their choice, and see how long it’s allowed to run for.
I’m fine with this policy but it needs to be consistent. Utility companies should be able to take money from employment income if they can take money from benefits.
Targeting people who are on benefits feels vindictive.
It is only like rent. That goes straight to the landlord. Surely this is to ensure that claimants pay for their fuel and don’t get into unnecessary debt by going down the pub, buying scratch cards or booking a holiday to Spain?
