Strange beasts, these ‘libertarians’ who love to curb the freedom of others

  1. I just don’t plan B this as a “libertarian” issue at all. It’s about protecting people from a minority of our society who don’t like being told what to do – what ever the reason, because they know best.

    Turning it into an issue is a false flag at best and a smoke screen distraction at worse.

    If you want to get worried about real “libertarian” issues, there is plenty of really scary, restrictive and authoritarian legislation the government is pushing rather than “forcing” us to have a bit of common sense.

  2. The conservative party and the Murdoch press is almost certainly more right wing and authoritarian than the people in this country. It is a shame they are the ones calling the shots at the moment. I would bet if we were governed by referendum like the Swiss – the British Majority wouldn’t be passing the Police and Crime Bill, nor have a hostile environment policy for asylum seekers.

  3. > More recently, though, many sections of the left have retreated from issues that once helped define it, from free speech to civil liberties. This has given a free pass to the libertarian right both to don the mantle of freedom and to distort its meaning;

    Agreed

  4. America’s founders went on about liberty and freedom, even whilst they owned slaves. This kind of hypocrisy has a long history.

  5. Freedom for the rich, the illusion of freedom for the poor. They cannot restrict us too much, too soon. People would notice that, hate it and riot. Doing it slowly means that people don’t notice it so much, especially if you have a nice bogeyman to blame the restrictions on, such as terrorism. It allows you to look far more caring than you are.

  6. Right wing ‘libertarians’ hate the liberties of everyone else. What they actually believe in is that they have money, so they should be able to own poor people.

    Raab 100% fantasies about being a slave master

  7. The usual “Liberty and freedom from consequences for me and everyone else cannot do anything I don’t like and they suffer all the rules”

    Typical miss-use of names to try to disguise their true purpose, same as a dictatorship calling itself “The Democratic Peoples Republic of wherever” or having a “Ministry of Truth” that exist to push pure propaganda and lies.
