It was obvious, not many have the capacity or capabilities to refurbish Leopards
> These tanks were decommissioned a few years ago.
> According to the publication, Belgium sold the tanks to OIP Systems at a price of only 15 thousand euros per unit since the Belgian military did not have hangars to accommodate the decommissioned equipment.
At €15,000 and 42.5 tons of (mostly steel) mass, that’s about 353 €/t. They were literally sold as scrap. AFAIK, that’s how most of the Gepards ended up, too.
Leopard 1’s are pretty outdated and meant for maneuver warfare. With all these minefields, Leopards are very restricted until a breakthrough can be made. Not to mention the Leo 1s have no defense against AT infantry weapons since back then they didn’t believe it was possible. Probably slap some ERA on the front and sides and they could take a hit before being destroyed but they won’t be useful on the front lines.
Would be great if anyone could lure or pressure 100 leo1a5 from both Greece and Turkey as they are ready to go and they have plenty. Job for Biden 😉
