Blow to UK salmon industry as trial post-Brexit export scheme is halted | Brexit

  1. This is fucking hilarious.

So, ‘taking back control’ means UK exporters now have additional costs and paperwork to sell goods to the UK, but a lot of EU products coming into the UK are just being waved through because they can’t pull their fingers out of their arses and actually implement the checks.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that almost exactly the *opposite* of the promises made by the lying conmen when campaigning?

You should crosspost this to LAMF.

  2. It’s a massively unethical and environmentally damaging industry….anything that negatively impacts it is a good thing in my eyes.

  3. It’s getting so tragic I’m pushing on hysteria. Is there a single industry that has reaped any benefits from leaving the EU? Genuinely – is there an example anywhere?

  4. No explanation of why it’s been stopped. Rubbish IT or something else?

  5. >The industry fears that online certification will not be in place until at least three years after Brexit came into force in January 2021.

    >“Even if it is their ‘ambition’ to do something in future, we’re not convinced it will happen this side of the next general election,” said one industry insider.

    >Scott said: “Farm-raised salmon is the UK’s largest food export, and we need governments to reduce the burden on our sector so that we can grow sustainably, produce more nutritious food, create highly skilled jobs, and boost the Scottish and UK economies.”

Sympathy is in very short supply these days but I genuinely feel like UK fishermen were taken along for a ride. I listened to an interview with Nigel Farage once who said his euroscepticism began when he worked in finance in the 1980s and new regulations came in that distrupted the industry. Fishing was just a good excuse to look like “we’re on the side of the working class”.

It didn’t help there were absolute wankers like Geldof who cermented Remain’s image problem with this group of voters.

  6. The horror, what will the economy do without salmon exports. What’s next, our apple and pork exports to china not working out? Oh wait.

Maybe in 2023 we should be trying to develop industries outside of agriculture? Or do we want to become the new Ukraine or something since they can’t farm as much anymore?

  7. Can Labour just come out and say “we’re going to rejoin the EU” already?

Utter disaster. Unfortunately they won’t because the stubborn oldies who voted for this mess will kick off because they refuse to see how much of a shitshow Brexit is and insist it’s “the lefties fault” Brexit hasn’t worked.

  8. Interesting:. The U.K. joins the EEC in 1972, held a Referendum in 1975, didn’t hold any Referendum to join any proposed European Empire, and yet trade problems arise.
