The massacre, which took place under the orders of Maurice Papon, was censored at the time. Papon was later convicted of crimes against humanity for organising the deportation of hundreds of French Jews to death camps during WWII, and served 3 years in prison. He was never punished for the 1961 massacre, or for another massacre at Charonne Métro station in 1962 or the forced disappearance of Moroccan Marxist Mehdi Ben Barka in 1964.
The curfew which was being demonstrated against applied only to Muslims.
Recent acknowledgment of the events by French President https://www.voanews.com/amp/macron-condemns-1961-inexcusable-paris-massacre-of-algerians/6273877.html
This is far from the only time this happened. I have seen 2 different places where Algerians were drowned that now have commemorative plates
I’m actually shocked that this is the first I’ve heard of this.
French being french. This is but a minor thing compared to what they did to Algerians in Algeria.
There was a context. More than 50 police officers had been killed by FLN terrorists in the weeks
before. Their protest was banned and not exactly peaceful.
And 60 years after this tragedy, a man of Algerian origin is in good position to become the next President of France.
Between 40 and 200? Jesus, did they get 6 year old kids to do a body count?
3rd post about this by British users in less than 24 hours. What’s the deal here?
To this day, France refuses to acknowledge its crimes against Algerians… it recently stated that there were worst events in history.
France’s racism is never shy. Still behaves like an extremist catholic nation that has an unfathomable hate for Islam and muslims.
The best joke in all this is that they introduced a law that makes it a crime to deny the Armenian genocide by the Turk, yet refuse to acknowledge their own genocide… this is not the action of a secular state, this is the behaviour of a hateful catholic regime that uses secularism for all the wrong reasons.
No wonder Chomsky and Finkelstein calls them the secular wahabists.
How is the exact number not known?
There is actually much more than meets the eye, very well resumed in this article :

Tl;dr : A propaganda stunt by the FLN terrorist group and the anti-french forces.
France was invaded by Germany in 1940. Those who fought for liberation and against German subjugation risked incarceration, torture, and execution.
The Western Allies liberated France in 1944.
From 1946, France fought a war for their continued colonization of Indochina in which those who fought for freedom and against French subjugation risked incarceration, torture, and execution.
After seven years of war, France admitted defeat and left Indochina in 1954. Three months later, France began fighting a war for continued colonization of Algeria in which those who fought for freedom and against French subjugation risked incarceration, torture, and execution.
After seven years of war, France left Algeria in 1962.
