Living on Como Lake, what disadvantages do you know?
2023-08-10
Hi, I am planning to move to live for a year in one of the villages near lake como, what are the nuances and difficulties to be aware of before moving.
I work online.
Living on a super touristic zone, living cost is not over the roof?
Cost? If you can afford the lifestyle there, I see few downsides. Sounds ideal.
“Como n” jokes
In Winter the sun doesn’t really make it above the mountains around the lake anymore.

Depends on how rich you are, obviously
Too many Russian oligarchs
I would think that living near a tourist hotspot is going to mean you have huge crowds in the area in the tourist season and a weird ghost-town effect when you are not in it.
Also, I would imagine that during winter, the area can probably be a bit spicy to drive in if and when the snow and ice comes… this is after all a lake of glacial water located in the mountains.
I would suggest Varese over como for living unless you are like retired or something…
The roads are narrow and congested.
1) check internet quality 2) costs for ‘regular’ eating (groceries, regular bars/places to eat 3) activities/things you want to do
Do this online. Find stores online that are there. Sometimes requires Google translating if you’re not good work local language, but these days can build a budget pretty good from local info online.
Check transport options, costs if without a car not in a big city
Tourist spots are honestly great to live for a short period of time IMO if you are set up right. You learn the local life quickly which is usually way cheaper cooler and get to take your time and have full year/seasons experience of the spot which can be great.
Enjoy! But thing I’d be most worried about is internet… make sure you have options that work for your work.

You might get groped by Andrew Cuomo.
