Hot take: Shoigu would rather engage into endless contention with NATO on the Russian western borders rather than carry on with the meat grinder in Ukraine to prevent it from joining NATO (among many other things). The first option is safe (I doubt he believes NATO plans to attack Russia) and opens enormous possibilities to allocate financial resources and ranks without actual combat. Just like in the good old days.

  4. this isn’t surprising at all, Russia are forced to do this. NATO have created the monster boogeyman they were designed for at the behest of US MIC.

  5. Build up? As in rebuild? Because the Russian ground forces in the north has been decimated due to the war in Ukraine.

    Will take them a long time to get back to pre-invasion levels.

  10. Good. Each Russian soldier on the NATO border is a soldier who could be in Ukraine instead. Put them all in Kaliningrad and leave Mariupol alone, it’s a win-win situation.

  14. Whats the point? is it some not existant military muscle flex? If NATO really wanted to, they would absolutly walk on your 10-20k “western border army” equipted with the worst possible equiptment in the arsenal(the best equiptment they have is in Ukraine) and that army consisting of conscripts that never saw a battlefield in their lifetime and probably have very limited to no training. At this point its like if Mongolia would pull its whole army to China’s border and call it “threat countering”, as if that would hinder a chinese invasion if China planned one.

  15. Fine by me! As long as those troops stay on the Russian side of the border they can move their entire army on the western border. For all I care, if they stay on their side, they can made their entire population an army and move it there.
