Hej,

I am visiting denmark on holiday.

I need to have a copper iud (kobber spiral) as emergency contraception.

I booked an appointment but was told kobber spiral is not emergency contraception – what the \*\*\*\* – from the doctor! So they cancelled.[https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/emergency-contraception#:\~:text=When%20inserted%20within%20120%20hours,form%20of%20emergency%20contraception%20available](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/emergency-contraception#:~:text=When%20inserted%20within%20120%20hours,form%20of%20emergency%20contraception%20available).

Do you have an equivalent of planned parenthood or a place that manages sexual health and reproduction judgement free? I will obviously pay… I am just shocked. Twice now told no…. Naturally it is time sensitive. Am I asking the wrong words maybe? :(.

(I understand there is the morning after pill. Ideally, I do not want this).

Many apologies for the somewhat negative first post, I have so enjoyed my time in Denmark but I am feeling worried and confused and hoping some local women may be able to point me in the right direction?

Many thank-you’s for any help!

  1. Emergency contraception is available over the counter at all pharmacies. But that only works within 24 hours of the unproductive sex.

But apparently you are actually correct. Cobber iud is considered emergency contraception.

The real question is when you had unproductive sex?

  2. Emergency contraception, at least in Denmark, is a pill. It has to be taken within the first 72 hours after sexual intercourse, and only works once every menstrual cycle.

You can buy it over the counter in Any pharmacy.

A Copper iud is not emergency contraception anymore than a condom is.

  3. Copper spiral is NOT emergency, and furthermore it won’t do any difference if the “damage” already happened. If you haven’t birthed any children they won’t give you copper anyways, they will give you a hormone spiral instead.
You can buy emergency contraception at any pharmacy (pills).

  4. I don’t know how doctors in Denmark feel about IUDs as emergency contraception (I don’t have a uterus so I’ve never asked), but for people saying outright that it’s not emergency contraception:

    > Kobberspiralen kan bruges som nødprævention, hvis den bliver lagt op indenfor 5 dage.

    https://www.apoteket.dk/sundhed/praevention/spiral

    > Den nødprævention, der virker bedst, er en kobberspiral. Den skal lægges op hos lægen senest 5 dage efter det ubeskyttede samleje

    https://www.sundhed.dk/borger/patienthaandbogen/kvindesygdomme/sygdomme/praevention/noedpraevention/

    > nødprævention, som findes i form af piller (såkaldte fortrydelsespiller) eller kobberspiral

    https://netdoktor.dk/sunderaad/fakta/noedpraeventionspillen.htm

    > Emergency contraception is based on either pills with hormones or on a copper coil. The copper IUD is most effective, but pills with hormone are the easiest to use and the easiest to get hold of.
