What are these and why is my lawn infested by them?

  1. Flying ants: it’s perfect weather basically for them to leave the nest. It has rained in the nearby past, but currently the weather has heated up and it’s sunny enough. Nothing out of the ordinary.

    It’s the same as a bee hive migrating (zwermen in Dutch). The offspring (not the musicians) are leaving to settle on their own

  2. Our cat discovers one of them in the house and decided to hide under the bed rather than defending the house.

    That in turn led the teenage daughter to believe that it must be a seriously dangerous creature and she rather hid in her room.
