All the glaciers have melt, the sea rose by 70 m. Now that Helsinki is underwater, what is the new capital of Finland, provided the country stil exists as it today ? Where would the capital city be, what would be its name ? Carte blanche, be creative !

  1. A couple of years ago there was a political proposal to move the capital of Finland to Jyväskylä. One of the reasons, if I recall right, was that it’s not on the coast.

    So I root for that

  2. Ha! My house is at 78 meters from the current sea level and about 20 km from the coast. Nice to get a beach house.

But the capital? I guess it’ll be in Tampere, considering how there’s a new fjord leading all the way from the sea.

  3. Boring answer, but with Helsinki, Turku, and Oulu gone, it would very obviously be Tampere, which is conveniently now closer to the ocean as well. Hyvinkää would probably grow a lot larger as refugees from PK-seutu would migrate north.

  4. We shall build an underwater dome and keep the capital in Helsinki-under-the-sea with the Parliament building on top of Malminkartanonhuippu!

  5. Kajaani! Perfectly in the middle of Finland. The dominance of southern/coastal cities will be no more!
