Background: Greiser, whose political career with the NSDAP had started in Danzig, was Gauleiter, responsible for the mass murder of Jews, Poles, and other people. His main administration was in today’s town hall on ul. Gołębia, but he’s better known for his representative offices in Zamek, which are now open to visitors free of charge. His private residence today houses Radio Poznań, Berwińskiego 5. There’s still traces of German occupation visible in the building’s interior.
He was caught shortly later and publicly hanged in Cytadela. The pope wanted him to be spared, he begged for mercy in letters, but to no avail.
Despite his crimes, there’s still a road named after him (Greiserówka), leading to Lake Góreckie in the Wielkopolska National Park. What used to be his second residence at the lake shore now houses the park administration.
