  1. Yeah. Not banning Nazis helped with German democracy in 1930s

  2. So instead of addressing the concerns that got such a large percentage of the population to want to vote for the AfD they’re gonna ban it?

  3. Does this solve anything? The AFD is a symptom of people being left behind, forgotten and angry. It isn’t the cause of these feelings.

  4. My fear – this will just further galvanize their supporters, and take away the voice of disaffected people, leaving them without alternative and leading to increased radicalization.

How about…. They just address the concerns that are pushing people to the AfD?

  5. With the Far Right party quickly rising up in the polls, some are concerned about the threat to democracy if said party were to win the election.

However, in my own personal opinion. Banning the leading political opposition is one of the key points of fascism itself. You become the fascists fighting what you claim to be fascists. It’s undemocratic and the consequences of doing so far outweigh the risks of AFD winning the election.

For context, say if in America the leading Democratic party assuming they had the majority in senate and congress decided to outright ban the Republican party because they consider them extreme. What do you imagine would happen?

Well it’d be civil war and the country would tear itself apart. Idk what the risk of something similar happening in Germany but I can’t imagine nothing goods from banning the leading opposition which likely has a significant amount of the population backing them.

How would you feel as a regular citizen if the party you intend to vote for got banned because the leading current party considered them a risk. Of course they consider them a risk, they’re the leading opposition rising in the polls. Of course they’re a threat. A threat to their power that is.

If you disagree with the AFD that’s fine, but if you want to beat them you beat them in a proper fair election where the will of the people decide who runs the government.

If the AFD are rising in the polls and face the potential of winning, that’s because the will of the people wish for them to be running the country.

I am far more concerned at the powers that wish to ban their opposition than I am of the opposition itself. Respect the democratic will of the people. The election must go forward.

  6. democracy, what’s that?

at this point the HRE had fairer elections

  7. >German democracy under debate

    Least fearmongering Torygraph title

  8. Well sometimes undemocratic measures can be done to protect democracy. But AfD’s lightspeed rise shows there are problems needs to be faced.

But I do not know if they are just anti-immigrant right party or potential founders of der vierte reich.

  9. That’s very democratic of Germany. Banning AfD literally solves nothing and and will just turn them into a martyr. How about just adressing and fixing the issues that makes them so popular, even if you have to bend to stuff you don’t like? What’s the point of democracy if you’re just gonna rule like a tyrant at the first sight of losing anyway?

  10. >The post-war German constitution, keen to avoid this authoritarian excess, made a party ban legally difficult. Attempts to ban the neo-nazi NPD party in 2003 and 2017 both failed at the highest court.

So if it’s pretty hard to ban a party, they should be really careful about this. A failed ban attempt might end up increasing their popularity.

  11. They are finances by Putin. I am sure there are evidence of that if someone scratches the surface

  12. Why are people operating in the system so blind or interested in easy & temporary patch up solutions. They ignored the Eastern Germany for decades, allowed unchecked hoarding of housing by corporates & wealthy individuals, allowed sale of important companies to China, destroyed energy security, made it difficult to build innovative companies in Germany, deindustrialised the whole country and kept using outdated technology to please bureaucrats. But their solution to all the problems is to ban AFD.
