So yesterday I took the train from Munich to Koln (S-bahn, ICE, RE). I understood that if my expected arrival time is more than 20 min, I can take any train that makes me arrive at my final destination (https://www.bahn.com/en/booking-information/passenger-rights/passenger-rights-in-rail-transport). So that is what I did (as I had an expected delay of 2hrs). However, I got checked, I explained and showed my delay to the ticket controller – who was a complete asshole and super rude as he immediately threatened to call the police – but he told me it’s not correct and wrote me out a fine of 170 euros (I thought not buying a ticket would give a fine of 60 euros?! How can having a ticket result in more).
Anyways, situation is I’m annoyed about a) the ticket and b) the way this guy treated the situation. Can someone please tell me whether I understood their passenger rights wrongly, and how I can best proceed in this situation.
