Reminder that having piss poor employment rights is a bad thing.
Lets hope public health give them a visit and drag them over the coals.
Had the same thing at our place. Guy had all the symptoms and GM told me that because he did a lateral flow that came back negative, he wasn’t required to do anything else and kept him on shift.
I kicked up a stink because I knew at the time the rules were if you have symptoms you isolate and do a PCR.
Anyway, I didn’t believe the guy had done a lateral flow so I had him do another one in front of me. Old boy had no idea what he was doing. He showed me his test going ‘look! Negative!’.
The test was completely clear, his eye sight was so bad that he was putting the sample in the wrong place. I ended up forcing him out to do a PCR and finished up service by myself.
Restaurants have been notorious bad for this shit. One cunt that is forcing symptomatic people to work could effectively infect the entire fucking region
Yeah, this is why I’m avoiding pubs, retail, and everywhere else that workers have too little rights that they can’t help but work when sick.
I’d love a nice winter pint and pizza by the log fire at the ship but I guess I’ll just have to wait for next year and hope we’re not still setting cases records.
Which is why none of my retail friends are testing or letting anyone know if they feel shit.
In a month or so time when businesses start to struggle with staff absence due to covid you can bet your life that they will be putting pressure on the government to get rid of isolation rules.
My missus got made to go in when all their staff were being told to self-isolate and some of the staff came down with covid. What happened? At 2am on the first day the then latest isolation period ended, she got pinged to self-isolate again. Ran a test in the morning when she got up, came back positive.
She then was ill as fuck for a couple of weeks and had lasting fatigue for a good while.
Apparently you’re not allowed to be off I’ll for anything other than full fat covid these days.
Well that manager will also be on the dole queue now, and well deserved.
“I don’t accept your resignation because I want you to come in so I can fire you.”
What a load of shit.
You would have hoped COVID would have made employers understand why having infectious people in the workplace is a bad idea, but no. It doesn’t matter if it is COVID, the common cold or ebola, you do not want highly infectious people coming in and making everyone else sick. One person taking a few days off is better than half your staff having to do the same all at once.
Minimum wage retail staff that depend on their jobs to make rent are in a position where they may need to come in when ill, which leaves them open to exploitation.
The lady in this article was in the position where she could put her foot down as she had another job lined up for after the New Year. Many others aren’t as fortunate.
Her positive PCR results came back a day later but her work sacked her because she didn’t do an LFT *and then book a PCR if that came back positive*.
LFT’s don’t work well if you have symptoms and it’s why they tell you to not to bother and go straight for a PCR. Besides the obvious moral employment issue this is a terrible fucking policy for H&S at that bar.
Was following the debacle on twitter. Pub owners are absolute cunts.
Tribunal case with a definite win seeing as government guidance is clear so they are breaking the law.

Hey, I have a great idea. Come to work and kill all of our customers right before Christmas, or anytime for that matter.
I remember when I got covid in the very beginning of pandemic. I was the first to wear the mask when it wasn’t advised yet but it didn’t help. I guess it was that customer that started coughing and spat into my eyes. I called my manager a few days later saying I have symptoms and she didn’t even bother to ask me how am I feeling. Instead, she started screaming blaming me for getting sick and saying how I let her down.
This is totally standard behavior for pub/bar managers, 90% are incompetent tyrants. You won’t find less qualified people running the show, I worked hospitality for near 7 years and almost everywhere is like this. The busier it is the worse the working culture as a rule.
There was a warehouse worker over on /r/antiwork who got fired for the same reason.
And this industry wonders why they can’t get staff anymore…
How irresponsible evetyone should boycott this venue
Yep complete morons like this are gonna put us in another lockdown fuck these people
Guys, just putting it out there: LFT are extremely inaccurate on the results! Do NOT rely on then 100%. If you have symptoms, stay home and do a proper PCR.
>Her manager responded: ‘I do not accept your resignation due to the below issues.
No such thing as “rejecting” a resignation in the UK, you give them notice, and they can either convince you to stay or allow you to go.

>‘If you are sick and can’t work your shift, you need to get your shift covered.
That’s not her job that’s the manager’s job.
Where am I going to find COVID symptoms at this time of night!?
Why the fuck should she arrange cover for her own shift, isn’t that the manager’s fucking job? You know, manage.
I’m a care worker and I was given a disciplinary when I had to get a covid test because I’d had a few sick days already, HR told me they count covid as a normal illness, I said so did you want me to come in and potentially spread covid (this was last year when the guidelines were to stay at home until your test results were in) they said well no, you did the right thing but we’re going to have to discipline you for it. I could potentially be fired if I dare to get sick again.
I truly think covid and covid related stuff like getting tests and awaiting the results should not be allowed to count towards normal sickness, my workplace are happy to put us and the people we care for at risk by sending us out on trips with service users to crowded places such as theatres, crowded shopping centres , send us out shopping using public transport, putting us on training courses with dozens of people etc ( but advise us against mixing with the public on our personal time) but they rub their hands with glee at the thought of disciplining staff for doing the right thing. No workplace should be allowed to get away with that it’s fucking disgusting and there should be laws against it to protect the employee for doing the right thing.
I can’t afford to be punished, I’m on minimum wage so if I were to have to have a test again or test positive I am now going to still go to work because I’m a person and I need to earn money and keep my job, I’ll feel like a shitty person for doing so but unfortunately it’s what I’m going to have to do because employers are using covid to punish people.
I now have a disciplinary on record for doing the right thing by trying to protect my colleagues, the people I care for and the wider public. How can that ever be fair?
I am unable to do my job from home, just as a lot of people are not. Can retail staff work from home, can cleaners or postal workers, hospitality workers etc?
So much has been done to protect those who can work from home. Where’s the protection for those who are not so lucky?
Stories like this are why the governments desire to just let businesses figure it out themselves us never going to work. It relies on good faith and you cant count on that
“I do not accept your resignation because I wanted to fire you first.” Power trip much?
And in the flip side my workplace has signs absolutely every fucking where saying not to come onto the site if you have a cough or other undiagnosed symptoms …… so naturally one POS turns up and coughs his guts up for a week solid with no one saying A damm word , now the entire office is sick one week before Christmas.
Nice dose of covid with your pint at the Walrus Brighton. No thanks. Management don’t care about staff or customers health.
Manager needs sacked. This is why covid is still here. People literally afraid for their jobs, being made to work when they’re sick. Absolutely shocking stuff.
I work for the ambulance service. Tested positive. Had legal 10 isolation. My manager asked me to come in after day 7 because my ‘self certification’ had expired. Like get fucked. I can’t go for milk, but you want me to come in and staff an ambulance? Are you fucking insane? It goes without saying it didn’t go further than that.
From the article:
>She said she believed the pub had a ‘toxic work culture’ which was ‘putting people in danger’ due to pressure for people to come in while unwell.
This pandemic illustrates why presenteeism is a huge problem.
Well, if she’s tested positive, then I’m sure she’ll be getting a big lump of compensation, at some point down the line.
Fucking hell this escalated quickly. I was only quoting the lyrics of the famous Beatles track I am the walrus on the r/Brighton feed the other day (down voted I may add).
But fair play, they deserve what’s coming. Life’s precious and shouldn’t be exploited for profit.
My friend was fired yesterday from her job as a waitress for finding a positive LFT test in the staff room and telling other members of staff about it. The whole industry needs to change.
Had a coworker asked to come in because we were understaffed even though they were off with covid and just got told to wear a mask, they don’t care here’s longer hours for shit pay and if you’re sick who cares you best come in anyway or you’re fired
And also had a negative lateral flow result, every symptom isn’t automatically Covid, if you just don’t want to work take the consequences.
And people wonder why retail, fast food and service jobs are all begging for workers.
