What did you think about Breaking Bad’s Bogdan Wolynetz, the Romanian car wash owner and Walter White’s part-time job boss seen during seasons 1, 3 and 4? Did he come across as Romanian, or feel like a fake stereotype?

  1. Way too slavic, like hollywood usually does. His name isn’t romanian, it’s polish i think.

  2. Romanians are pretty diverse when comes to looking, i don’t think there’s a certain stereotype about this.

  3. Wolynetz isn’t a romanian name, but that being said, he was played by a romanian actor and actually spoke romanian on screen. All in all, I think the writers did a pretty bad job with the name and the character, but it was well acted.

  4. Besides the Polish name, they chose an actual Romanian actor who speaks the language. I think the actor did well, the character is obviously a stereotype of an Eastern European immigrant.

  5. If they wrote his name as Volîneț instead of Wolynetz, maybe it’d be even more believable, as Ellis Island-izing the name doesnt happen that much anymore; in that case he’d probably give off more of a Bessarabian vibe than anything off the name, instead of Polish.

The actor is Romanian and he did play him well, the bits of Romanian are obviously accurate. He does fit the bill of the sleazy *patron* type, and heavens know there are many of them here.

  6. The way he acted and spoke wasn’t really Romanian-like…

But he perfectly portrayed the average Romanian small business owner which thinks about himself as being some sort of godlike being compared to his employees.

  7. Yes, romanian bosses, especially from that generation, are known for not respecting employees. They act like they own you basically and you should be grateful that they pay you for your work.

Also, romanians are not well known america, so I doubt that even a writer who wanted to could do something stereotypical.

  8. All I can say is that I was very surprised to hear someone speaking romanian. Did not expect that.

  9. I heard he is actually a scientist and he knew much more about the science going on in the show but they never consulted him on the subject, he just did his role and that’s it.
