Isn’t this due to the Tories ramping up exploitive migration practices?
At least I know in London, a *majority* of workers in undesirable jobs appear to be both migrant and ethnic minority.
It’s interesting how the rosy-cosy liberal mass-immigration, has resulted in this essentially 1950s-America state of affairs where it’s a racial minority which is doing most of the servant work.
It’s almost as if we need to ditch bourgoise neoliberal identity politics and “white saviour” open borders pretensions, the fool’s errand of saving billions of people beyond our borders, and restart actual socialist and pro-labour-movement activism, to improve conditions for the citizens and already residing migrant workers within this supposedly democratic, sovereign state.
Interesting that one of the highlighted examples is someone who chooses an insecure job so he can hang out at the mosque during the day.
He’s also 19, which makes me wonder if age plays a bigger role here than ethnicity.
hardly suprising. there’s been a huge rise in non-EU migrants arriving, many of whom arrive with few or no resources. It’s going to take time for them to establish themselves and their families into “secure” jobs.
How does this compare with white and or native workers in the decade that popularised zero hour contracts?
Surely the problem here is the fact that more than 1 in 10 jobs is “insecure” – either zero hours or temporary?
The demographic distribution of the people who are being exploited in these types of jobs is a secondary issue. If there were fewer ethnic minority workers in these jobs, and more white workers instead, it would barely be an improvement.
There is a place for ZHC and temporary jobs, but they should be the exception rather than the rule. Employers shouldn’t be allowed to just declare a role to be ZHC or temporary. They should be required to justify it, and prosecuted if they cannot.
